Elizabeth Canterbury is a feisty defense attorney who thinks nothing of putting her career on the line as she tackles high-risk and often unpopular cases. Elizabeth and her law professor husband Matt have settled in Providence, R.I., hoping to distance themselves from the still-unsolved disappearance of their young son. Ironically, however, Elizabeth's determination to win justice for her clients only drives home the fact that she and Matt have won no such justice for themselves. Her colleagues include Russell Krauss, an attorney who unfairly was forced out of his job with the local district attorney's office after facing down his corrupt boss, and associates Chester Grant, a congressman's son, and Molly McConnell, who often finds herself disagreeing with Elizabeth.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Canterbury's Law births an amoral and intriguing antihero that Julianna Margulies plays with aplomb, the series is weighed down by uninspired courtroom drama.

Taken on its own, the series gets off to a reasonably strong start, propelled nicely by some decent (and, for network TV, hard-edged) writing and engaging performances by an above-average cast. Go to Full Review

It works, thanks largely to the hugely watchable star, former "ER" resident Julianna Margulies. Go to Full Review
Alan Sepinwall Newark Star-Ledger 09/23/2019
Margulies is a potent enough screen presence that this part of the show could be interesting, but Canterbury's self-destructive streak gets overshadowed by all the Leg Show material and the overheated courtroom theatrics. Go to Full Review

Canterbury's Law is not subtle. Like other recent series -- Damages, Saving Grace, The Closer -- it offers up a gritty, restless professional woman in what looks like perpetual crisis -- or at least series-TV crisis. Go to Full Review

"Canterbury's Law" was way too grim for the masses, with precious little humor to lighten the mood. But setting the criticisms of darkness aside, fans of legal dramas will certainly enjoy the cases. Go to Full Review

Watch it for the drama and moments of humor, but know that the real laughs come when you start to predict which stereotype Canterbury will exploit next. Go to Full Review
