Constantine: Season 1 (2014-2015)

Critic Consensus: Constantine's creepy atmosphere, high-stakes action, and splendid special effects combine with a welcome touch of humor to overcome narrative flaws and present a version of the title character that's close to his comics counterpart.

Tv Season Info

An adaption of DC's Hellblazer comics, this supernatural thriller revolves around a seasoned, streetwise demon hunter and master of the occult named John Constantine (Matt Ryan). With his soul already damned to hell, Constantine has given up fighting the good fight when the series opens. That is, until he's reluctantly thrust back into the fray when the daughter of a late friend is targeted as a threat to a mysterious new evil that's rising in the shadows. Before long, Constantine is on a journey of redemption, traveling the country protecting the innocent, while dealing with the sins of his past. Joining this anti-hero in a trench coat on his adventures are a psychic, Zed (Angélica Celaya); his oldest friend, Chas (Charles Halford); and a morally ambiguous angel, Manny (Harold Perrineau).

Where that misguided flick [2005 film] attempted to take the very best things about the character of John Constantine and stone them to death with Keanu Reeves's cheekbones, this new series gets the basics more or less right.

Several elements - horror, action, charm - worked in the initial attempt, so we're not damning this one just yet.

Some characters just work better on a printed page, where voices and motivations can roll around in our imagination rather than a physical incarnation.

Messy pilot that doesn't offer enough backstory, or reason to care all that much about Constantine.

It's playing on a larger canvas than most TV shows and its hero, with his rumpled look and ratty raincoat, has a Columbo-like appeal. Once he gets his foot in the door, he may be hard to get rid of. Read more at

You can only expect so much when you choose to make a television series based on one of the least known DC characters ever. And after that horrible movie we got back in 2005, how bad could it be. Well, pretty bad... Really bad, actually... The show really hits the low in many of the things we see in the show. Matt Ryan is honestly the best part of the show and he isn't even that good in the show!
