Despite the show's unevenness, it's refreshing to see a teen comedy where girls get to be the heroes despite being super weird and anti-establishment. Go to Full Review

Davey & Jonesie’s Locker is a funny show with two charming leads, but it also knows that, even in the multiverse, characters come before gags, which is always better. Go to Full Review

Eli B 05/10/2024 Awful. I don't like being pointlessly negative, but this show blows. It was so bad that I only got through the first episode, after which my entire watch party agreed that we wouldn't watch the show again. The casting decisions were absolutely mystifying - half of the parts seemed to have been gender-swapped, possibly including the leads. Either that, or the writing was just that clunky (and given some of the other writing in this show, that's certainly not out of the question). The only actor who played their part reasonably well was the annoying girl (and I don't even think I have to point out that if the only person who knows what they're doing is the person whose entire purpose is to be unpleasant, then you have a serious problem). The plot itself is even worse - the two leads are awkwardly characterized in a way that reeks of 'adults trying to be hip with the kids', and their mindset of 'you're all sheep' seems like one of the writers watched a single video of Andrew Tate and convinced himself that's what the youths are into these days. The most mystifying part of all was the short scene with the boy who one of the main characters likes (likes? Hates? Who can really tell?), wherein she stares at him in a slow-motion sequence with romantic music. But then the scene ends abruptly, and the boy is never brought up again in the remainder of the episode. The entire sub-conflict of the two leads potentially being separated felt very forced, and frankly, unrealistic. I know you'll probably read that and say 'but this is a sci-fi show, it's not supposed to be realistic', and I agree with that - but that only applies to the sci-fi elements, not the parts that are actually trying to be realistic. The main conflict with the science teacher seems like it was made by a writer with WAY too much ambition. The science teacher plot has the only two notably good parts in the entire episode (those being the fax machine bit and the silent film bit during the dimension-hopping part), and I wouldn't even consider those to be particularly memorable bits. But enough about that, lets get to the biggest headache of all - the dimension-hopping sequence. For one thing, the dimension-hopping sequence is way more psychedelic and nightmarish than it has any right to be, and the visual effects hurt to look at. Even though the show was already bad at this point, I might have even watched the next episode if not for this sequence, which was extremely off-putting. Overall, the first episode took way too long to establish its setting, only to jump away from it immediately. Painting a picture of the main character's setting before they are whisked away can be good if executed well, but this show does it horribly wrong. For example, The Owl House was able to paint a sufficient picture of how bleak the main character's life was in a relatively short time frame, and the viewer can easily see why she chose to leave her life behind. In Davey & Jonesie's Locker, however, the show takes way too long to show what the characters' lives are like, instead opting to flesh out a full world with its own sub-plots, which immediately become irrelevant once they enter the locker and leave their home dimension. I know that it probably isn't fair to judge a show by its first episode, but unless this show does a complete 180, I'm not going to waste my time by watching any more of it. To summarize: In the first episode, Davey (or maybe it was Jonesie, I don't really know or care) said: "Do you think our message of 'you're all sheep' will be hindered by the fact that the costume store didn't have sheep masks?" (that's not an exact quote - again, I don't really know or care), and I think that that line summarizes the outcome of the show almost perfectly. The creators were clearly trying to say something in this show, but the meaning got buried in a mountain of lackluster writing, poor casting, bad video effects, and unfunny jokes.
