"Doctor Who" has become a cultural phenomenon -- both in the UK and America -- over the course of several decades since premiering on the BBC in 1963. Many of the long-running show's earliest episodes are lost, though, after master negatives were destroyed when the archive was purged in 1974. Part of the show's history that was destroyed includes six-part adventure "The Power of the Daleks," which features the regeneration of the first doctor into the second as he and his companions battle Daleks on the planet Vulcan. BBC has now commissioned animated versions of the episodes, based on the show's original audio recordings, surviving photographs and film clips, which director Charles Norton calls "the most ambitious `Doctor Who' archive restoration ever attempted." The massive undertaking offers fans a chance to experience the episodes decades after the masters were destroyed.

The animation can only capture a shadow of what made this story so special, but a shadow of something like The Power Of The Dalek is still well worth seeking out, all the more so for the remarkable nature of its resurrection. Go to Full Review

It's a shame the story has been lost to time, but the animated version has at least has brought it to life with great care. It comes highly, highly recommended! Go to Full Review

Although the audience isn't quite led by the hand, the pace is slower, more measured; tropes are more often explained rather than set down, and the action is sometimes contrived. That said, there's a satisfyingly mysterious tone to "Power". Go to Full Review

Even in this new form, you still feel like you're watching a piece of television history. Go to Full Review

The Power Of The Daleks is a classic in every sense, and in its political intrigue and the way it handles the Daleks -- not as shrieking grunts but as intelligent, scheming creatures -- it feels strangely contemporary. Go to Full Review

What the series offers is a handsomely animated, charmingly nostalgic adventure that, in a very Doctor-like fashion, grants audiences the ability to see the past come to life again in a whole new way. Go to Full Review

Raven M 11/13/2023 A classic given new life . It was enjoyable and entertaining . See more Jonathan K 07/09/2021 Troughton's time as The Doctor lead us to some great stories, and Power of the Daleks is a great example of this. As for this version, it's more than adequate, although I cannot deny that the animation isn't as good as it could have been. There are numerous moments when the episode has a somewhat long wide-shot where big things take place, but the other characters just stand around, gawking, or worse, smiling as if they were not seeing something potentially horrific. This is likely because the reactions in the original were off-screen, or the limited reference material was just static images, so the reaction was not known. However, it does tell the story well enough, and luckily, the story itself is excellent. It features some good mystery from multiple points of view, each with bits of information that the others do not have, and the culminates in a solid finale where things do properly escalate. If you like the classic series, I strongly recommend picking up this DVD. See more 03/23/2021 A classic episode of the long running UK series. Sadly lost when the BBC wiped lots of video tapes in the 70s it has been restored in animated form. Great stuff when the makers of Dr who treated the audience with respect. See more 03/29/2020 This is a fresh tomato. See more 01/24/2020 This is by far the worst doctor. The writting is just so terrible. The TARDIS is crowded and the writting is just so terrible! I have no desire to watch any more of Chris Chibnall's terrible story telling. I tried so hard to like this doctor but I'm continuously disappointed in everything from the writing to the octane to the story. I won't be watching again until they get rid of Chris chibnall. See more 01/15/2019 Complain about the bad animation all you want, but the BBC wouldn't have had this animated, if it they thought it was ready to be found, soon. It is difficult to set animation to bad quality audio, that wasn't even meant for animation. I can't wait, for The Macra Terror! See more Read all reviews
