Critic Reviews for Game of Thrones Season 8

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (1)

In the final six episodes, Game of Thrones should have felt like a game of chess. Instead, it veered very close to feeling more like a game of checkers. And that's probably why so many viewers felt burned.

It's such a fundamental shift of priorities that, for all of season 8's technical virtues and the sound resolution of a few story beats, it still can't help but feel like a betrayal of the show's ethos

It was a fitting end to the story.

Daenerys and Cersei are portrayed as too ambitious and emotionally unfit to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

Even at its wobbliest, these final episodes demonstrate a stunning degree of filmmaking skill that find even the weakest installments standing head and shoulders over most recent feature films of a similar nature.

Game of Thrones found purpose. Not to press our faces to the fire, but to show us those already burned, and teach us how to hold their suffering.

If only [David] Benioff and [DB] Weiss had had more faith in these quiet moments. Instead, they tried to load as many epic battles and as much incredible CGI into the final season as they could.

May 24, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Season eight made the regrettable mistake of giving half its time to an underwhelming villain at the expense of the characters who made the show special in the first place.

May 27, 2019 | Full Review…

Season 8 is the weakest, but it's still good. It's just "Good" in amongst a series that constantly hit "Excellent" makes it really stand out...

May 23, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

[This season] made choices that I just didn't have to wrap it up somehow, and this season is just full of more extremes and it just doesn't work anymore or fit in with the rest...

May 22, 2019 | Full Review…

Season 8 doesn't feel like it was earned, with too little time dedicated to growing characters paired with a greater emphasis on rushing to major plot points, rather than proving to those of us watching how inevitable they were.

May 22, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

I don't think anyone can be happy that this season focused, in the end, on Jon Snow, the least complicated main character on an ensemble full of brutal instincts and grasping ambition.

Audience Reviews for Game of Thrones: Season 8

8 years of buildup for an unforgivably awful ending.

Terribly disappointing, ruined the Story and Sacrificed everything for nothing. In a Word...Rotten.

Season 8 was a rushed pile of dung and it was clear the D&D just wanted to wrap things up quickly so they could get working on ruining star wars. This isn't much of a surprise since the writing started to suffer quite badly after they ran out of source material and culminated in the trash heap of season 8. It's not just that the plot that was bad. The quality of the dialogue degraded to the point that characters seemed completely changed for no reason. Even basic production/editing flaws were rampant like having characters instantly teleporting anywhere from 10m up to 1000km.

I've never been so disappointed in a TV show. I was invested in this story for years, I loved watching it, talking about it, trying to decipher clues and meanings for it all to amount to nothing. I don't know why the show runners couldn't just pass the torch to someone else who would have stretched this season out into another two or three. It would take that many to do the story justice! This season left me feeling deflated, I'll probably never re-watch the show again - i would binge it before each new season came out but with such an unsatisfactory ending, what's the point? However, one cannot deny that It was beautifully shot and powerfully acted.

Good season but the quality is massively reduced compared to the other seasons. Interesting storylines continued but characters completely reverse on their morals and personality - often doing things that don't make sense. It just all seemed very rushed.
  • 5d ago
    Ruined the series.
  • 6d ago
    Worst final season in history.
  • 6d ago
    Totally spoilt a good show

    Poor so god dam poor.

Season 8 of Game of Thrones stands as one of the biggest disappointments in TV history. What should've been another 2 or 3 full seasons worth of remaining story are crudely crammed into just 6 episodes. Despite good performances from all the actors, excellent cinematography, and a great soundtrack, the quality of the writing for many of the episodes is absolutely dire, undermining all the great work elsewhere.
