A solid season opener, The Red Woman balances its ongoing mysteries with a bit of humor and features Sansa's touching reunion with Brienne of Tarth.

Critic Reviews for The Red Woman

Take this episode's final, striking moments... choosing to end "The Red Woman" with the fact that she's actually quite grey, as opposed to a more dramatic plot point, feels like a wholehearted embrace of the show's fantasy roots.

The sight of Cersei's face falling as Jaime's skiff approaches with Myrcella's casket is something to behold. The wonder of both the series and the books is how characters you feel to be completely unredeemable manage to still evoke sympathy.

Beyond the various plot machinations, this episode drew enormous power from a series of great moments focusing on women's eyes.

If there's a theme to "The Red Woman," it might just be Girl Power, which is a promising turn.

Oh how we've missed your cruel, manipulative ways Game of Thrones.

[A]n episode that surprisingly takes few steps forward to the future, opting to reflect on the many world-shaking events at the end of season five, in what turns out to be exceptionally satisfying fashion.

Surprise has its place, and isn't mandatory in a table-setting episode like this.

It was an overall solid, if unexciting episode, and I found myself quite satisfied with its languid pacing and the foundation that it built.

This was a strong, surprising return to Game of Thrones... I loved Brienne's daring rescue of Sansa and Theon. Truly, this is what we needed from Game of Thrones. Some good bloody news!

If 'The Red Woman' as an episode isn't overly memorable, that final moment nevertheless stands as one of the more enduring images in the series' history.
