Perhaps that makes this the most fitting Game of Thrones episode of them all, a reminder that the battlefield is forever ugly, anti-climatic, and predictable, and it's only outside of war that we actually have hope to evolve, and surprise the world.

It did not let down, delivering what was undeniably the best battle ever seen on television, let alone Game of Thrones.

As much as I enjoyed "Battle of the Bastards" with all its beautiful bluster, the real meal is what comes next.

Possibly the most incredible battle that has ever been seen on TV.

As Dany learns to rule in Meereen and Sansa rises to power in Westeros, it's certainly asking what might happen when people who were meant to be bartered as chattel start to broker their own deals.

After a long wait, drawn out even longer by filler episodes, the two finally faced off in the epic smackdown that many have been waiting for - and it was worth it.

Game of Thrones puts on spectacular battles, but the point is always what happens next.

Last night's "Battle of the Bastards" was one of the most nerve-racking hours of television I've ever watched.

This battle was mind blowing. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect ending to a despicable character.

Can't shake me off of this being one of the best appearances of all time, fam. Drogon arrived on the scene like T'Challa in Civil War.

While "Battle of the Bastards" absolutely ranks among the most spectacular, visually dynamic hours in television history, it still feels spectacularly predictable.

Battle Of The Bastards gives us all the cathartic end we crave, and at least there were those side trips to Meereen.

This concentration of focus was one of a very strong episode's greatest strengths; the story breathed and ebbed and flowed in an artful and satisfying way.

"Battle of the Bastards" is peak Game of Thrones.

This time, the episode gave the world one of the most brilliantly made war scenes in movie or television history and also perhaps one of the best episodes of the entire series.

This episode, for any flaws it might have, is spectacular, at once huge in scale and yet also personal, never losing itself under the sheer weight of numbers ... it's breathless, frenzied stuff.

The episode does exactly what it's supposed to do, but it doesn't demystify or descralize war.

Beautifully chaotic, epically grimy, and almost unbearable to watch, but impossible to look away from.

The magic and agony of "Battle of the Bastards" was how visceral all that otherwise predictable dying felt.
