In the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester in the 1950s, gruff, down-to-earth police inspector Geordie Keating's methodical approach to police work complements the intuitive techniques of local vicar Sidney Chambers, and later the Rev. Will Davenport. Geordie forms an unlikely partnership with both men of the cloth, and as partners they bring different insights into the crimes they start to unravel, forming true friendships as they work together. Village life in Grantchester proves to be much livelier than its sleepy appearance might suggest, with intrigue and gossip swirling in the background of Geordie's investigations.

Critics Consensus

Grantchester is an easygoing sleuthing series that is satisfying as it is gentle, with a likable partnership between James Norton and Robson Green at its heart.

If this Mystery! doesn't live up to its exclamation mark, it at least it delivers on some predictable pleasures. Go to Full Review

Some of the episodic mysteries are stronger than others, but the characters wear well over time, and the use of jazz is rather shrewd. Go to Full Review

Beks C @beks22 Mar 8 I just discovered Grantchester and it is my new favorite TV series of all time. I am obsessed. The acting, the writing, the location filming in Grantchester and Cambridge- everything is perfect! I absolutely love the blend of mystery, drama and romance. The characters are complex and believable, and I love them more with each episode. I love the relationship between Sidney and Geordie. James Norton and Robson Green are great in these roles. I have fallen in love with James Norton as Sidney. See more Steve C @Slartybartfast Jan 29 While interesting to be plunged into little England of bygone times, the pacing for me was tediously slow. The characterisations felt bland and very vanilla. Nothing grabbed me and said 'pay attention' and I lost interest quickly. My wife will likely binge watch this and so I will have more opportunities to reassess; Left to my own devices I fear one episode is sufficient though limits further assessment. See more Nancy D @RT85518344 09/30/2022 I like this show but are we actually supposed to believe that this "priest" who does not believe in coincidence, just happens to be in quite regular proximity to murders, causing him to double as a police investigator? Uh, really? See more 07/04/2022 This is an easygoing series that is based on the strong and likeable partnership between James Norton and Robson Green for the first 4 series before Norton was replaced by Tom Brittney in an equally likeable partnership. The series deals with some typically 50's issues in an honest manner and the later series developed some of those issues (like homosexuality) in more depth. Well worth your time to watch. See more 05/31/2016 A hot and angsty vicar who is all too human is certainly an unexpected pleasure. The mysteries aren't gripping, but the interaction of all the characters and their own struggles in life are what keeps you watching. Very good show and can't wait for more episodes. See more 04/17/2016 Season 1 was good and promising. So far, Season 2 is hideous. Not even Rev Sidney's adorable angst can save the horrible plots. PLEASE find better writers who can keep the story lines to small town incidents and complicated romance and keep the Russian spies to the cutting room floor. And we can accept Geordie's hostile tendencies until they become abusive-especially when it is towards a woman-shame on you guys... See more Read all reviews
