Critic Reviews for My Valentine
The execution of My Valentine varies from competent to truly frustrating.
While it adheres to certain genre tropes, it also blatantly rejects other expectations, displaying multiple tonal variations as it throws occasional dark comic vibes on top of scenes that otherwise play as deadly serious.
My Valentine filters itself through the glitzy world of the music industry, but at its core are some very important themes. Both Valentine and Trezzure's struggles tell a touching story about female empowerment.
MY VALENTINE shines a horror-filled, almost absurdist light on codependent relationships, both emotional and physical abuse, and the mental and literal loss of identity that can happen in both relationships and the entertainment industry.
It hits most of its targets with flourish. Between the sharp, observational writing, the visual flares (there are constant onscreen graphics to underscore certain points), and the film's cotton candy color palette, Levin leaves no stone unturned.
My Valentine points cupid's arrow with intent to kill, but misses the larger mark when it comes to structural cohesion.
Should we take this thing seriously, or laugh at it? Neither approach is even remotely viable.
My Valentine is going to leave people divided. It's a visually gorgeous film that flickers like a neon sign but audiences will only get what they bring into it.
