Monarch: Legacy of Monsters: Season 1 Reviews

I wish this was two separate seasons. I really do. Because now, instead of one fantastic Godzilla show and one middling to decent one, we have a series that comes to life only long enough to frustrate the audience.

All the interpersonal stuff seems rather… well, small compared to the existence of walking, dinosaur-shaped atomic bombs.

A welcome throwback in this series about two siblings uncovering their family’s links to a secret organisation.

Despite giving in to the tropes of what makes a kaiju watch satisfying, the Apple show expands its canvas to make this a meaningful addition to the MonsterVerse franchise.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters makes the majority of the shots that it takes. Sometimes, the series buckles under the weight of its massive ensemble, but it ultimately succeeds in expanding the Monsterverse’s lore, Titans, and future.

Monarch finds the key to revitalizing Toho monster folklore by staying faithful to the source materials but enriching them through a group of carefully delineated characters. [Full review in Spanish]

It’s more than a little underwhelming to have an episode teeing up a future plot development that’s ultimately not that interesting, especially when the human drama around it isn’t the best Monarch can do.

If you don’t care about the MonsterVerse movies, this show probably won’t change your mind. However, if you’re into Godzilla, Kong, or the various Titans who square off against them, Monarch is a lot of fun.

An ambitious project that’s also fun, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is world building done right.

Though the show doesn't have the budget for wall-to-wall battles, it's full of likable characters and nicely-executed special effects.

Full Review | Dec 11, 2023

Adding a more human element to the MonsterVerse is a nice touch, but Monarch suffers from overwrought melodrama and occasional cringe-inducing dialogue. We also don’t get enough monsters.

Between the performances, the monsters, and the writing, Apple has another hit on their hands for fans and non-fans of the Monsterverse alike.

With fun characters, cool visuals, and actual commentary, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters far exceeds expectations. Black and Faction found something special with this show.

This melodramatic action adventure featuring Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt takes its time gaining momentum, and jumps around like a jack-in-the-box moving from continent to continent. Thankfully, this father and son duo make it all worthwhile.

While this spin-off series has to accommodate a recent blockbuster revival of Godzilla movies, it does a good job of establishing its own identity.

A multigenerational family saga masquerading as a globe-trotting adventure, the sprawling show has more in common with Apple’s own epic drama Pachinko than with the action-packing MonsterVerse series of films.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters prioritises the personal over the grand, to show audiences that the franchise can have dexterity and range. That it does it with as much finesse as it does is unexpected. Talk about defying expectations.

Appreciate the human stories and the fantastic production values, though the level of energy between the past and present scenes is uneven. Could use more Godzilla + fellow big monsters!
