Perhaps their strikingly different personalities make the relationship between detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles so effective. Jane, the only female cop in Boston's homicide division, is tough, relentless and rarely lets her guard down, while the impeccably dressed Maura displays a sometimes icy temperament -- she is, after all, more comfortable among the dead than the living. Together, the best friends have forged a quirky and supportive relationship; they drop the protective shield in each other's company, and combine their expertise to solve Boston's most complex cases.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Based on Tess Gerritsen's novels, Rizzoli & Isles is about as dog-eared as a paperback mystery, filled with standard characters and clichés.

It's a compelling enough tale, with Harmon projecting just the right amount of fear and defiance and Isles a complementary mixture of comfort and good sense. Go to Full Review

Rizzoli & Isles is kind of a mess of a show. There are interesting elements around the edges, but the writing is just dire. Go to Full Review

The suspense in the more violent scenes works nicely as we're only given glimpses of the crimes being committed. Go to Full Review

Chazz Palminteri is inexplicably on the show as Rizzoli's father, and he seems to be channeling Christopher Walken's corpse for the role. Go to Full Review

Michelle T @Michy777 Jan 27 Beyond the Procedural: A Critical Review of Rizzoli & Isles Rizzoli & Isles (2010) stands out as a well-crafted crime drama that transcends the conventions of the procedural genre. While grounded in homicide investigations, the series distinguishes itself through sharp writing, consistent pacing, and an exceptional partnership between its protagonists. Detective Jane Rizzoli brings grit, intuition, and emotional depth, while Dr. Maura Isles adds intellectual rigor and analytical precision. Their dynamic not only drives the narrative but also humanizes the darker aspects of the crimes portrayed. The show skillfully balances suspense with character development, avoiding formulaic repetition by exploring personal vulnerabilities, ethical dilemmas, and evolving relationships. As a result, Rizzoli & Isles succeeds not merely as a crime series, but as a thoughtful examination of justice, friendship, and resilience. See more 06/25/2020 Based on the Tess Gerritsen book series, Rizzoli & Isles is an exciting, female lead police drama from TNT. The show follows a Boston homicide detective and a medical examiner who work together to solve crimes. Angie Harmon (Rizzoli) and Sasha Alexander (Isles) lead the cast and have good chemistry together; however the Isles character seems a bit like a Dr. Brennan knockoff from Bones (being over literal and socially awkward). Also, there's a bit of gender politics being played, though nothing too heavy handed. Still, the writers do a pretty good job at creating interesting cases-of-the-week and at mixing in a little comedy to lighten the tone. There are also some impressive guest stars featured, including Michael Massee, Billy Burke, Donnie Wahlberg, and Brian Dennehy. It's not the most original police drama, but Rizzoli & Isles delivers a solid first season that shows a lot of promise. See more 08/13/2014 Rizzoli & Isles is terribly unfaithful to forensic methods and science, but unbearably faithful to cliches and unoriginal standards. See more Read all reviews
