Mike P @RT09890132 Jun 6 Spoilers...Unbelievable true crime docudrama, one of the most shocking; about the so-called "Doomsday Mother", Lori Vallow; a local Chandler, Arizona woman; an All-American Cheerleader type, who got so caught up in a local LDS preacher's gobledygook, that she wound up murdering her own kids! (And her ex-husband, if that wasn't enough)! Told to us from the clear-eyed perspective of her adult son Colby, who watched the whole thing happen, but was totally helpless to stop it. Completely mesmerizing and devastating from start to finish. A disturbing look at cult behavior, radical fundamentalism, mental illness; and the deadly cocktail that all can create! Only drawback: maybe they could have included some of the interviews with the assailant that appeared on NBC News, (that were released later; but should definitely be included in some sort of re-release). See more J M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 01/18/2024 Simply put, this is the best true crime documentary since DON'T F*** WITH CATS and possibly the best thing I've seen so far this year. Director Skye Borgman also made ABDUCTED IN PLAIN SIGHT, GIRL IN THE PICTURE and DEAD SLEEP. She is obviously at the top for her game right now and arguably the best director of this genre currently working. Often times these limited series tend to wear out their welcome, particularly when they're 8-10 episodes long. At only 3 episodes, this is one of those rare examples of wishing it would have been longer - I didn't want it to end. And that's the biggest compliment I can pay it. It is riveting and spellbinding but never seems to wallow in depravity or exploitation. I was not familiar with this case, even though it's relatively recent and still ongoing, so the details surrounding this strange case were fascinating for me. And it just kept getting better and better, more mysterious and stranger with each passing moment. I was quite taken with Cody Ryan, the eldest son whose interviews make up a bulk of the movie and found him to be quite empathetic and relatable. I was therefore quite saddened to find out afterwards that he and his wife have separated, and she accused him of sexual assault. These allegations are too recent to be included in the documentary but knowing that makes it all even more shattering. I would love to go into more particulars, but I don't want to spoil anything for those like me who were unfamiliar with the case. Suffice it to say, three hours have never passed more quickly, and I can easily see this joining my list of best documentaries of all time. Reading other people's text messages is as satisfying as listening to someone tel you about a dream they had. 1/4 of this series are text messages you are supposed to read. If I wanted to read and not watch, I would buy the book. The story is told through Sam talking about Jack who tells you he went to meet Jill so she can tell him what Marci said about Rob...
