Critic Reviews for Strike Back Project Dawn
All Critics (20) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (15) | Rotten (5)
So fast-paced it makes 24 look sluggish, and with a brighter, livelier tone that embraces both multi-cultural inclusiveness and macho backslapping, the Sky/Cinemax, UK/US co-production Strike Back is first rate pulp TV.
If something has been missing from your TV screen since 24 went off the air, like an unapologetic, fist-pumping, nonstop action thriller, Strike Back needs to be your appointment television for the next 10 weeks.
In almost every respect, a terrible piece of television drama. By turns predictable and far-fetched, it has the emotional nuance of a shoot 'em up computer game... And yet, I'm ashamed to say, an unknowable part of my brain sort of enjoyed it.
What I want to know is who kidnapped Jed Mercurio and where are the ruthless bastards keeping him?
In a TV landscape dominated by procedurals set in sterile rooms with banks of super-computers, it's good to see a show that heads out into the field, where people get their hands bloody.
The show is well-plotted, tightly paced and crisply edited.
The action is breathless, fast and glossy, with more than a nod to Die Hard. Amanda Mealing is the buttoned-up Section 20 boss, with Eva Birthistle the tech expert. Who'll succumb to Scott's rugged charms first?
Strike Back struck me as gung-ho nonsense.
It's still hard to forget that when we meet him, he's a crooked underground fighter in Kuala Lumpur. Which almost sounds like a parody of an old action movie when you say it out loud. The rest of this show is fine.
It doesn't have the intelligence or complexity of an ambitious HBO drama, but it's clever enough and delivers plenty of well-executed action sequences with a gritty style.
Gratuitous elements aside, Strike Back is a decent enough cops 'n' terrorists drama.
It offers no obviously considered commentary on today's wars or geopolitical conditions. It's more a videogame, where war occurs because that's simply how things are.

Mar 04, 2018Special Forces?? More like Special Farces. Roll your eyes as you roll along to every dark corner of the planet with the most incompetent group of operators ever put together by the British military. When they're not getting themselves kidnapped (once by a beautiful nyphomaniac no less), lost, or losing their weapons in a fist fight, they're all earning money at a modeling agency where I'm sure they moonlight. Cliches abound along with gratuitous sex and and violence, which is so common in American productions that I had a hard time believing this was the brain child of Sky One productions. I suppose there must be some appeal to this ridiculous series otherwise it couldn't have lasted six seasons...but then again, the masses are asses.

Jul 31, 2015'Strike' Back' is an Action Adventure Political thrill ride similar to the pace of Michael Bay's 'Bad Boys' movies. The original British 'Strike Back, Origins" with Richard Armitage was very watchable but the show had a storyline that gave you a reason to like John Porter, giving him a character arc that gives meaning to the actions he takes...but in this new season everything changes including the fact Richard Armitage dies in the first episode (due to landing the role in the Hobbit franchise), the agency is completely different with none of the familiar faces of the Origin story, and Section 20 puts a British Agent (who was born in the states) & an American Agent (who is actually an Austrailian actor) as a team that goes after terrorists on highly dangerous secretive missions with more action than story. It is clear this show is about the high powered action instead of story. I think this season is still trying to find it's identity after the Origins series...next season may improve when it does. Since I watch shows like 'Homeland', 'The Blacklist', & other action paced political dramas, I was a lot tougher on reviewing this show. I think it is a good show but if you are looking for more depth, you should consider watching 'Homeland'.

Jul 03, 2015I watched in a binge session. I continued watching because I like the two guys and their relationship with each other. Thought there was too much female nudity and senseless killings but in spite of that found this show to be very good, better then average.
