Critics Consensus

Melissa Benoist shines as Superman's plucky little cousin in Supergirl, a family-friendly comic-book adaptation that ditches cynicism for heart.

Cat is the mouthpiece that proves Supergirl's creative team is perpetually having a conversation with each other about what it means to write a female-fronted superhero series on broadcast network television. Go to Full Review

It's tough sitting in the shadow of the Man of Steel, and Supergirl's comic life always carried baggage in that regard. This Supergirl shakes it off nicely in the first episode and soars into the sky. Go to Full Review

There's a galaxy to save - and Benoist does it with believable inner and outer strength without ever abandoning the plucky, wholesome nature of a grown-up Laura Ingalls. Go to Full Review

There are some things that are over-the-top, but it's obvious that with such a high-powered hero at the heart of the show, they had to go big or go home. Go to Full Review

Supergirl isn't a perfect show by any means, and this first episode had more than its share of slightly awkward moments. But was it fun? HELL YES. Go to Full Review

The Cursed Legion @GAVINSISEMORE Dec 23 This series was absolutely horrible. I loved the ARROW and the FLASH CW series and couldn't for the life of me get myself to enjoy this series. See more TJ J Sep 6 Not bad, but not the best start to the new series. Okay, the positives. Melissa Benoist was great, as she always is, and Calista Flockhart was a highlight of the season. I loved the budding mentorship that Cat Grant developed with Supergirl, as evidenced by the scene on Cat's balcony after Kara is cured of her red kryptonite poisoning... However, I felt there were some really glaring missed opportunities. First was the character of Maxwell Lord. Bad acting combined with bad writing made for a really bad villain with no depth or nuance. They should have picked an older actor, say in his 40s, and had him be much more charming and subtle. I would have loved to see a slowly budding romance between Alex and him, which would have created natural tension between Kara and her once everyone finds out, and would have put Alex in a rough spot. I also wasn't a fan of the whole Fort Rozz concept that I felt backfired, as the series became more of a freak of the week series. General Lane was an annoying character, and to some extent, so was Lucy... Anyway, 3 stars for kickstarting the series, but could have been so much better. See more Daniel P Aug 6 One of the best superhero series of all time. Melissa Benoist gave us the best Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El, adaptation of this century. She showed a Supergirl, who's trying so hard to fit in, at the same time, she felt so guilty of having her power and the impossibility of using them without hurting her family and her friends. I also loved Calista Flockhart's character, Cat Grant, is a character so iconic, please she's the queen of the media, a person who's able to destroy anyone's career, but also bring it to life. The way I felt, Cat Grant was not only a Supergirl's friend but also a mentor; it's definitely the best part of the show. See more Nightbird May 15 Story plot...none. Satisfaction in watching it...nope. A waste of time...MOST DEFINITELY. There is literally no valid reason for this series. Nothing about it makes me ache to watch the next season, let alone episode. I cannot handle the abuse I put myself through watching it. From the moment "Supergirl" opens her mouth to the minute she closes it I get an instant headache. Acting...poor. Directing poor. What about the other seasons...NOT INTERESTED. See more Faiz D May 14 The show got much better after the first few episodes. See more stefan C Apr 25 Funy and a realy good actress for Supergirl.
