Tell Me a Story

Critics Consensus

Despite an enticing cast and promising premise, Tell Me a Story's overly plotted, grim take on Grimm's Fairy Tales fails to enchant.

Critic Reviews for Tell Me a Story Season 1

All Critics (15) | Top Critics (6)

To fill its empty soul, Tell Me a Story tries to capitalize off of time-honored fairy tales and timely anger surrounding Trump. And that, my friends, is a horror story made for no time whatsoever.

But if nothing else, Tell Me a Story's got a wicked bite that might serve it well when trying to grab curious viewers on a streaming platform that doesn't quite have anything else like it.

"Tell Me a Story" [is] more like the Brothers Grimm meets "13 Reasons Why," a perfect combination of childhood frightmares, teen angst and adult drama.

It's a lot to take in, but Williamson is clearly still in tune with his knack for rapid storytelling, occasionally leaving us with cliffhangers at act breaks that are so strong, they could serve as season finales.

Jul 29, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The veteran Williamson can really rattle your bones even when he's not necessarily engaging your intellect. And he certainly does so with Tell Me a Story, in which a bunch of dull and seemingly unrelated stories suddenly merge into a shudder-filled whole.

And while there is quite a lot of drama and scandal in both shows, Tell Me A Story is notably different - and more grown up - than its ABC counterpart [Once Upon A Time].

More grim than Grimm, this hot mess may make you wish they were all just telling a different, and better, story.

Tell Me a Story is the sixth original series being offered by CBS All Access. While it's a strong drama so far, it still isn't enough to make it necessary to subscribe to the streaming platform.

Audience Reviews for Tell Me a Story: Season 1

How can a show CALLED "tell me a story" be so BAD at telling a story? So many disconnected random threads and frustrating, irrational, unlikable people.

Loved this story I loved how all the stories were woven into each other great story keep me wanting more

Girl breaks into house with friend on lookout. Girl tells friend to be on lookout and call if bad guy shows up. Friend plays on phone instead of being on lookout. Girl in house puts phone on table and cant recieve call. Guy comes back to house and twists licked doorknob 15 times to create tension. The writing is absolute trash. The show gets half a star for the decent cast. I hope the dad gets more roles and escapes this garbage.

Goes off on some forced anti Trump diatribe within the first ten minutes. Turned it off and came here to confirm the show is hot garbage.
  • Nov 11, 2018
Once again I completely disagree with the critics... I absolutely love the show! Great acting, eye candy and a great plot! Interweaving classic tales and transposing them into the modern world, what a great idea! Great show, don’t trust the critics. Sometimes I wonder who they think they are to trash a show lithe way they do.

Slow start to a promising series with a dark twist on nowadays fairytales. Exceptional acting job from Billy Magnussen from its first appearance and I eager to get more from its co-stars Paul Wesley and Kim Cattrall storylines. Definitely recommend to watch it!

Awful... I feel bad for the number of really good actors in this. Was painful to watch. I couldn't even finish the first episode. Not going to subject myself to a second.
