What to Know

Critics Consensus

Handsome set pieces and exceptional performances help make The Miniaturist engaging enough, even if its version of events doesn't quite measure up to its mysterious source material.

"The Miniaturist" may feel raw and green, sometimes naively so, but in its awkward, otherworldly way champions hope and change, and that's rarely a waste of time. Go to Full Review

The Miniaturist will keep you hooked, and guessing, piece by beautifully handcrafted piece. Go to Full Review

The three-part period piece has some weaknesses in the final chapter, but it is nonetheless an intriguing story led by a trio of stellar performances. Oh, and it's completely gorgeous. Go to Full Review

Still, the mystery is thrilling, and the show is gorgeous to look at, and Taylor-Joy is a fantastic actress who keeps the show humming along, even when her character doesn't quite make sense for her surroundings. Go to Full Review

It tells, in a effective way, a story that fascinates in the molds of a good series. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

It's absolutely glorious to look at in its fully formed universe of old Amsterdam; it's wicked and wild but in the turmoil, she finds out who she is, her previously unknown abilities and how adversity can cause one's heart to grow and love. Go to Full Review

Caroline A 04/05/2019 Rarely is a movie as good as a good book but this 3-part miniseries was not only true to the book (gripping, suspense-filled, moody, unpredictable) it was as beautiful as a Dutch painting. Gorgeous sets and costumes transported me to 17th century Amsterdam. And the details were exceptional (those miniatures!!) Scene after scene looked like they could be frozen into an oil painting by a Dutch master painter. I loved every minute of this series. See more Dee B 10/16/2018 I loved this show! I wish it would continue~! See more Kristin H 10/07/2018 Beautiful to look at, but the story is really just a sketch -- the characters are not fleshed out, and the "mystery" is disappointing. See more jack v 10/05/2018 If one watches it with the audio muted, it's a visual delight. If one attempts to follow any story line, especially if one expects it to make any sense, then it's just ridiculous. The plot isn't and the resolution of the several story lines violate every rule of drama. See more 09/23/2018 ALL GOOD UP UNTIL THE FINAL EPISODE AND THEN IT WENT STUPID. See more 09/23/2018 I was so taken with this mini series. The way it was done, it kept one questioning some of the relationships. As it turned out, none of my suspicions about most of the characters were not correct. I was disappointed in the ending, I would have liked a happier ending. Hopefully there will be a sequel.
