Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone sets his sights on Russia in this documentary series for which he was granted unprecedented access to Vladimir Putin. Stone conducted more than a dozen interviews with the Russian president over a two-year period, with no topic off-limits. This four-part series features highlights of the talks, providing viewers with intimate insights into Putin's personal and professional lives. The world leader discusses everything from his childhood living under communism to his rise to power, dealing with multiple U.S. presidents during his reign, and his thoughts on the current state of American-Russian relations.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Putin Interviews, conducted and shot in Oliver Stone's famously suspenseful style, may prove to be the most revealing look into opaque Russian President that viewers can hope to get -- although many may feel that the controversial world figure is given too much leeway during these conversations.

Are The Putin Interviews an instance of Stone hanging or drowning? Not that it matters  --  the series is DOA, either way. Go to Full Review

Stone's strength when interrogating Putin on the election hacking only underscores his weakness when discussing the strongman's social policies. Go to Full Review

For students of politics, there is almost as much gold in these programmes as in Putin's chapel. Go to Full Review

Over time the value of The Putin Interviews will probably rise: they are an exceptional document of a world-changing leader speaking at great length. But at this moment they are drained of immediate impact by virtue of being overtaken by events... Go to Full Review

The conversations are conducted via a Russian translator, and you have to be in the mood to read a lot of subtitles to engage with Putin and Stone's policy discussions, but that small effort is well worth it. Go to Full Review

See more 06/28/2017 I watched these interviews not because I wanted to see Stone confronting Putin on controversial issues. I have read enough on those on western media. I watched this series to learn more about Putin the man. To that end, it was a rewarding experience. He came across as truly intelligent and knowledgeable. Did it change my mind on the authoritarian nature of the Russian state? Not that much. What it did was giving me a pair of glasses to understand how Putin reasoned and saw things, taken at face value, of course. I wonder if Stone would try to do "The Xi Interviews" next. That will be fun! See more 06/19/2017 a never before seen take on a man dubbed most powerful in the world by some american magazine no one probably ever heard of (time or something) ... they didnt mention their own president, they mentioned putin and das mädchen ... so ... the title "commander in chief" is a title, right? barring that its like the most open take EVER on the man, i must commend mister Stone (its stone right?) for his bravado in talking to a man that must have an aura like strawhat luffy haki in real life so openly ... i particularly like the one single scene where he is driving his own car ... escorted ofcourse, he's like russia ichiban but he's behind the wheel, he doesnt have a driver, and hes like casually responding without flinching or thinking on what to say, its been eye-opening and most refreshing really, we agree on at least one thing : america caused al qaeda and is , as for the homos ... well its 2017, i dont really care where men poke their dick as long as they dont poke it at me but mwell ... diffferent places need different strategies right, its a bit older than this belgium here or the states for that matter See more 06/19/2017 A truly remarkable film. Oliver Stone gave his all to this magnificent piece of work. Extraordinary. I plan to watch this movie at least 3 more times within the next few months. Putin is a world leader we cannot afford to ignore. It would be extremely negligent for any elected official not to watch and listen carefully to each question and how it is answered. I viewed this film on my laptop so I could have the screen close enough to my face that I could watch Putin's expressions and body language. I want to scream out FASCINATING. Stone was able to cultivate a very intimate portrait of Putin. Putin is the son of Russia. I believe Putin wants his legacy to be that he brought Russian back, made her viable and served the people well. I believe this desire is more important to him that acquiring wealth and more wealth. I believe he is a man of character and a very strong belief system that remains steadfast. With that said, I would not want to be on his bad side. Just sayin. See more 06/18/2017 Fascinating. A must watch. See more 06/18/2017 Most folks would want to watch it for the hacking of the election or some never-before revelation. If you are, then just watch Part IV (and spoiler alert: there aren't any). I dont disagree that Oliver Stone seems to have lost his edge throughout the years (some of the retorts from Stone are just flat out silly & at times obsequious) but this is the one glimpse of Putin, a principled man, with a thorough understanding of the past & how he wants to take it to the future. Do watch it. Putin IS a fascinating leader. See more Read all reviews
