The problem, as director Juliette Eisner demonstrates in her riveting Nat Geo documentary series The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking the Truth, is that Zimbardo’s account of the study was far from definitive. Go to Full Review

Director Juliette Eisner takes a critical, intelligent look at Stanford professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo’s “experiment” and how it created a fake prison and hired men to either play people incarcerated there or guards. Go to Full Review

This well researched documentary will make you question what you thought you knew and even, perhaps, how psychological studies are presented to the public. This is a must-see for all media and psychology students and participants. Go to Full Review

Jessica E @EvilAngel Dec 13 From a psychological and sociological standpoint, this for me was an example of exactly why I want to study psychology, Zimbardo was a dishonest manipulative person in my opinion, I found myself half yelling at him through the screen in response to him blatantly lying in my eyes, then the truth was uncovered by psychologists who seem to genuinely want to search for facts and find the truth. Hearing one prisoner "having a mental breakdown" in the experiment videos clips was awful, then to learn it was an act was a relief even if I felt silly for falling for it originally. I absolutely love the full circle moment of having everyone not only interviewed but to also bring them all back together to close that chapter and lay their feelings and experience on the table was very satisfying! This will be a staple in my psychology interest documentaries from now on! Amazing work! See more Brian E @RT09885993 11/20/2024 Totally ruined by the most overbearing wall to wall sound design and music in memory, drenching out all the dialogue. Shame. Also well padded. See more Michael F @RT94144733 11/15/2024 Director Juliette Eisner has torn my old psych 101 text book to shreds with this film! While challenging the common narrative and learnings of the SPE with smoking gun evidence and compelling expert testimony she doesnt rub Dr. Zimbardos or his philosophy's face in it. Instead she honors the experiment, both its author and participants, by giving them all a chance to talk. This 1971 full bodied California cab carries notes of Pirendello’s Six Characters and Kurosawas Rashomon. The series moves with an elegant gait thanks to impressive editing and an illustrative score. With ideas like hive mind and tribalism bouncing around like dinner party ping pong balls, a film about human nature and good and evil is just what the doctor ordered. It’s not prescriptive in its finishing move tho. The series is much too thoughtful to fall victim to such a cheap trick. Instead it asks and helps us to answer new and equally relevant questions. As much as culture strives to embrace “both/and” thinking, tv critics and their bosses want cancellation and a moral that points in only one direction to help people feel tucked in to their neat little ideological baby bjorns. Unlocking the Truth does not do this - it lets multiple uncomfortable TRUTHS exist at once. The hearty discussion following the doc was quite enjoyable too. I laughed through episodes 1 and 2 and cried in ep 3. it’s an exceptional documentary; Watch it. Big ups to this series. Sincerely, The GenderlessIslandFishPerson See more Read all reviews
