Chris Vognar Rolling Stone 02/21/2024
The Truth About Jim walks alongside Barter quite competently, but it never makes that turn into creative subjectivity. We’re left on the outside, craning our necks, trying to get closer. Go to Full Review
Nick Schager The Daily Beast 02/12/2024
Though it falters during a second half that’s filled with prolonged detours and excessive self-congratulation (not to mention few answers to its central questions), it proves an intimate look at women’s struggles to have their voices heard. Go to Full Review
Alison Lanier Pajiba 02/27/2024
The Truth About Jim is a fascinating and disturbing true crime genre entry, with the story refreshingly in the hands of someone who was actually impacted by it. Go to Full Review

3/5
The Truth About Jim has good intentions and charts curious ground through its possible familial connection to a notorious serial killer. Not everything in this curious case study works. However, when it connects, it’s powerful storytelling. Go to Full Review

Ed T 02/28/2024 I thought this was horrifying. What a terrible person See more Nathaniel R 02/20/2024 This was an incredible documentary of a family grappling with generational trauma and trying to discern whether Jim was the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Killer. Shame on all these ridiculous reviews leaving 0.5 stars. Life doesn’t give us clean answers and sometimes all we can do is present the madness as we know it. See more B J 02/18/2024 Shines light on what an unchecked predator does to a family See more E.T.O. 02/17/2024 HBO/Max usually has the best content among streaming services, so when I saw the synopsis of this series, it was promising. Unfortunately, it's promises don't just go unfulfilled, the viewer is outright misled. There is no doubt that Jim was a creepy, abusive man. However, there is zero evidence the guy ever killed anyone and this begins to become apparent within the first episode. By the end, when it's clear there's no evidence he never killed anyone it's infuriating because the creators knew they were misleading the audience before ever releasing it. How this series got onto HBO is curious. It feels like somebody knew somebody important in order for the series to get on the air. Not to minimize the tragedy of abuse, but there is nothing unique here and the story isn't presented in a way that's any more intriguing than any other story of abuse. So why did this series make it while other, likely better efforts didn't? See more Kristin S 02/17/2024 The series starts off with a lot of promise, and then quickly falls flat. Really this series more about family pain and sexual abuse. In the end, you end up feeling frustrated as it is extremely slow, and repetitive, reaching and ends up not being what you thought it was gonna be about. See more Kathryn J 02/16/2024 Oh, good grief. Sweet, well-meaning people trying to find out if creepy Jim is a serial killer. Just the loooooongest, most dragged-out documentary I think I ever saw. I won’t add spoilers but I do want people to think long and hard about how they fill their time. You can’t get those minutes back. See more Read all reviews
