Talking is not The Walking Dead's strong suit, and "Home" has a lot of it, but the episode is redeemed by an action-packed ending.
Last night's episode flipped (the previous week's) script, with 30 or so minutes of quiet character development before unexpectedly exploding into an adrenaline-pumping 10-minute finale blowout.
Last night's The Walking Dead was not unlike last night's All-Star Game; there was no discernible strategy at play, there were long lulls between short bursts of captivating action, and there was no soul - but both events were thoroughly entertaining.
I spent most of "Home" trying to understand why I'm finding this recent run of episodes so dreary.
Without any threat of cancellation on the horizon, the show seems content with leading us in circles.
Crazy isn't a great look on Rick, but I'll take it over stupid.
'Home' frequently gets lost within itself, spending a lot of time in conversation with characters, without much to tie it all together except a shared gun fight at the end.
We found the midseason return to be a walk down a familiar road; one where the narrative wheels spin and Rick chews up the scenery.
All in all, a definite improvement on last week's hour, and a good sign of things to come.
It may not be handled as efficiently as Daryl's brief subplot, but in the final moments of "Home," The Walking Dead gets to show off its undeniable strength of placing characters in a situation that forces them to react.
Sunday night's episode has once again rekindled my hopes for the show. It was one of the strongest episodes in the season so far.
"Home" was an incremental improvement over "The Suicide King," but didn't quite pull Season 3 out of the rut it's stuck in.
This was another piece-mover episode... I'm hoping things pick up soon, because this is two episodes like that in a row after a long break.
