Vice Principals must live off its finer details and, luckily for the show, these are often marvellously absurd and well-observed.

You'll wish that Bill Murray, the retiring principal, wasn't leaving after five minutes, but he does.

Fitfully amusing comedy has a dark, cruel streak.

If you can get through the first two puerile episodes - and that's a big if... you'll probably notice a much better and possibly smarter work of satire lurking just out of reach.

Vice Principals has some weird twists... but it doesn't have enough laughs and or a satirical bite to keep it propped up. Perhaps there is a plan for down the road, but not one traveled by me.

McBride and Goggins' alliance steers the ship in a surprisingly sensitive direction that threatens to turn two obnoxious schmucks into a pair of sympathetic putzes who may unwittingly be on the road to self-improvement.

I was wary of Eastbound & Down at the beginning, but a fan by the end; I expect something of the same could happen here.

If you can harmonize to its brutish wavelength, it becomes one of the funniest comedies of the year.

There are much better shows about lovable losers out there that don't have the same penchant for cruel and dated humor.
July 18, 2016
There's a clarity of purpose in the opening episodes of the show, a sense that things are hitting the ground running -- and, quite possibly, going straight to hell.

School's in session. You don't want to be tardy for this.

Russell and Gamby have potential to be nothing but caricatures, but in the hands of Goggins and McBride, there's more depth and more mania.

This is a Danny McBride comedy - not exactly funny, but weirdly engaging in its own uncomfortable way. His fans should be pleased. Everyone else will be puzzled - or worse, repulsed.

A Veep-like pair of nasty leads makes Vice Principals a verbal delight, but Danny McBride's HBO follow-up to Eastbound & Down lacks comparative substance.

Vice Principals is the kind of nasty, mean-spirited, generically offensive comedy that we just don't need more of in 2016.

Sometimes 'Vice Principals' is about unexpected friendship that forms through a shared hatred. And sometimes, it's just adults cursing at each other and breaking things in slow motion

The first episode doesn't begin to suggest how far Vice Principals will go and how funny it will become. However, you can readily appreciate the chemistry between McBride and Goggins.

There isn't much that can pass for comedy here, but there's plenty of compelling viciousness and two powerful performances.
July 15, 2016
Walter Goggins makes a habit of being the best thing about the television shows he's in.
July 15, 2016
McBride's new project lacks the wide streak of melancholy that gave Eastbound its secret weapon: existential depth.
