British outfit Clean Bandit enjoyed chart-topping, Grammy-winning success thanks to an infectious dance-pop sound which incorporated their classical beginnings and a whole host of hitmaking guest vocalists. The core Clean Bandit line-up of cellist Grace Chatto, violinist Neil Amin-Smith, bassist Jack Patterson and his drummer brother Luke first came together in 2008 while they were all studying music at the University of Cambridge's Jesus College. Named after a loose translation of a Russian phrase meaning "utter rascal," the group initially opted for the DIY approach. 2012 debut single "A&E" was both self-penned and self-produced, while its accompanying video was created by Chatto and Jack Patterson's own Cleanfilm production company. The band further showcased their intriguing blend of classical music and electronic pop on follow-up "Mozart's House," a collaboration with original vocalist Love Ssega who had quit the group in 2010. But it was 2014 fourth single "Rather Be" that took the band's career to new heights, reaching pole position in their homeland and the Top 10 in the US and picking up a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, also launching the career of guest performer Jess Glynne in the process. Clean Bandit continued their winning streak with a string of UK hit singles and gold-selling debut album New Eyes before Amin-Smith decided to leave in 2016. The group soon proved they could cut it as a trio with three UK number one hits featuring Zara Larsson ("Symphony"), Demi Lovato ("Solo") and Anne-Marie and Sean Paul ("Rockabye"), with the latter also becoming their second US Top 10 entry. Also boasting appearances from Rita Ora, Craig David and Ellie Goulding, sophomore What Is Love? arrived in 2018.
