Snail Mail
Working under the artistic alias Snail Mail, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lindsey Jordan crafted a sound strongly reminiscent of '90s indie rock, but with a feel that's languid and moody rather than overtly rocking. Jordan, who was born in Ellicott City, Maryland on June 16, 1999, started playing guitar at the age of 5, and decided to start a band in 2015. The songs on her 2016 EP Habit were written when Jordan was a high school sophomore and junior. In addition to soaking up '90s indie influences like Cat Power, Liz Phair, et al, Jordan also had a more direct connection to that era in former Helium singer Mary Timony, Jordan's guitar teacher and mentor. Snail Mail eventually ended up on Helium's old label, Matador Records, for the 2018 debut LP Lush, which bears less of a lo-fi sound than the earlier recordings but is equally raw and uncompromising. Jordan was just shy of 19 when the record was released, but the precociousness of her work earned Snail Mail positive reviews from such high-profile outlets as Pitchfor and Rolling Stone. 2018 also saw the launch of Snail Mail's first full-fledged tour as a headlining act.
