With a raw, rootsy sound that paid homage to '60s garage rock influences, it's no wonder that The Shelters found some famous supporters from the classic-rock camp early in their career. Singer/guitarists Chase Simpson and Josh Jove and drummer Sebastian Harris started the band in Los Angeles in 2014, having all been a part of the band Automatik Slim before that. Tom Petty took them out on tour as the opening act for his side project Mudcrutch. The members contributed to the 2014 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album Hypnotic Eye, and Petty became enough of an admirer to produce both The Shelters' 2015 EP on Warner Bros and their self-titled 2016 debut album, which underlined the band's allegiance to the golden age of rock by including a cover of The Kinks' "Nothin' in the World Can Stop Me Worryin' About That Girl." Bruce Springsteen's right hand man Little Steven Van Zandt was on The Shelters' side too, championing "Fortune Teller," the first single from their album, on his radio show. But despite their celebrity admirers and major-label deal, The Shelters didn't make a major commercial impact upon arrival. Instead, much like The Heartbreakers and The E Street Band, they started building up their audience one show at a time, playing at a multitude of festivals and opening for everyone from Gary Clark Jr. to The Kooks in the process of slogging it out on the road in classic rock 'n' roll style.
