Nina Wu (2019) 81% 4/5 EDIT “The film manages never to strain credibility, mostly due to how well it establishes Nina’s sense of isolation while parceling out salient details.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Dead Pigs (2018) 97% 4/5 EDIT “[Doesn't have] a plot to propel it forward so much as principals who cross paths, clash, and tug the narrative this way and that. But at least they’re lively and compelling.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Black Holes: The Edge of All We Know (2020) 100% 4/5 EDIT “Though the film is full of jargon that may fly over viewers’ heads, it remains accessible and easy to follow, thanks to how the filmmakers and subjects eschew explaining complicated mathematical formulas or scientific theories.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Karmalink (2021) 89% 4/5 EDIT “Karmalink’s strongest assets are the visuals and chemistry between the two adventurous kids... The main plot that emerges, however, threatens to become a little too esoteric for its own good.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Accepted (2021) 95% 4/5 EDIT “We definitely get a sense of how tenuous college dreams are for teens whose parents never went through the process themselves.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Free Chol Soo Lee (2022) 100% 4.5/5 EDIT “The filmmakers never lose sight of the importance of the mass mobilization of ordinary Asian Americans. In the archived footage, the numbers of protestors increased over time, as well as their passion.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) 71% 4/5 EDIT “[The] extensive conversational scenes between the pair help them to reach a happy median between the rational and magical, the mind and heart, when it comes to the prospect of having wishes fulfilled.” – Film-Forward.com Sep 25, 2022 Full Review Cane Fire (2020) 100% 4.5/5 EDIT “Banua-Simon meticulously explains how the same corporations that initially exploited the natives and later undermined the labor movement never left Kaua’i, but became more deeply entrenched.” – Film-Forward.com Jun 23, 2022 Full Review Mau (2021) 61% 3.5/5 EDIT “One of the most interesting aspects of this reverential, yet insightful documentary is how approachable Mau is.” – Film-Forward.com Jun 23, 2022 Full Review Hold Your Fire (2021) 95% 5/5 EDIT “What Hold Your Fire accomplishes especially well is its objectivity. It never pushes too hard to exonerate or prove the guilt of any side.” – Film-Forward.com Jun 23, 2022 Full Review Bad Roads (2020) 90% 4/5 EDIT “Twists and turns abound with the most satisfying moments being those in which relationships and expectations of who has power get turned onto their heads.” – Film-Forward.com May 2, 2022 Full Review The Earth Is Blue as an Orange (2020) 93% 4/5 EDIT “Tsilyks attention to detail shines through as the main household setting has noticeably battered interiors, but it still feels homey and welcoming, thanks to what she catches in the periphery and edges.” – Film-Forward.com May 1, 2022 Full Review Blue Bayou (2021) 75% 1.5/5 EDIT “Besides hazy character motivations, its not always clear what ends Chon has in mind.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review My Name Is Pauli Murray (2021) 94% 5/5 EDIT “We also get a sense of the pain they felt, which feels especially raw at times, thanks to the direct access to their feelings via their own words, samples of which appear constantly. ” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Found (2021) 95% 4/5 EDIT “Though Lily, Sadie, and Chloes journey is engrossing in and of itself, the figure who makes the film unexpected propulsive at times is Hao, who engages in old-fashioned detective work.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review At the Ready (2021) 90% 3/5 EDIT “Its as if Crow saw the proverbial writing on the wallthat her subjects were starting to outgrow the cluband pivoted the narrative so it was more about their coming of age via hard moral decisions than how the Criminal Justice Club shaped their lives” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Storm Lake (2021) 88% 4.5/5 EDIT “In some of the most telling moments, we observe the trust between the paper and its readership, even among those with differing political opinions who nevertheless rely on it to keep up on whats happening in the community.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Cusp (2021) 86% 3.5/5 EDIT “As heavy as Cusp mostly is, the main subjects emerge on the other side of their bad experiences, and its actually remarkable seeing them changenot just physically but emotionally as wellbefore our eyes.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Procession (2021) 98% 4.5/5 EDIT “By the mid-section, the narrative starts to follow a pattern of prep scenes, filming, emotional catharsis, and then repeat. Yet Procession never becomes monotonous because each mans journey has its own twists and turns.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 17, 2022 Full Review Donbass (2018) 88% 4.5/5 EDIT “Each of these scenes, which feature long takes that make them appear to be unfolding in real time, raises our expectations of the possibility of justice, yet that fails to occur.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 12, 2022 Full Review Cow (2021) 96% 4/5 EDIT “At its best, Cow manages to immerse us so fully in the mental space of its titular subject.” – Film-Forward.com Apr 12, 2022 Full Review President (2021) 91% 4.5/5 EDIT “The films latter section is every bit as involving as what came before and, perhaps more importantly, highlights how the battle for democracy cant involve just one man at the vanguard.” – Film-Forward.com Mar 25, 2022 Full Review Babi Yar. Context (2021) 89% 4.5/5 EDIT “Ultimately, director Sergei Loznitsa performs nothing less than a miracle by stitching together found footage from multiple sources into a coherent, unsettling depiction of war and human loss.” – Film-Forward.com Mar 25, 2022 Full Review Reflection (2021) 95% 4.5/5 EDIT “Casting-wise, the standouts are Lutskyi for his gripping emotional transformation and portrayal of PTSD and Levchenko as a youngster who suffers her own war-related tragedy. ” – Film-Forward.com Mar 25, 2022 Full Review Last Exit: Space (2022) 100% 3/5 EDIT “Last Exit: Space may appeal to Werner Herzog diehards due to its similar predilection toward eccentrics. Still, when compared to many of his own credited documentary efforts, it suffers by not being nearly as personal, soulful, or visually interesting.” – Film-Forward.com Mar 25, 2022 Full Review
