Atanarjuat the Fast Runner (2001) David Stratton It's way, way too long, and considerable editing would have made it more audience friendly. Still, once you get into the gentle rhythm of it, you're seduced by the exotic beauty of this rarely seen world.

Moulin Rouge (2001) Margaret Pomeranz Moulin Rouge is a spectacular achievement.

Traffic (2000) David Stratton [Traffic] is an ambitious film from Steven Soderberg, but I`m not sure it`s quite up to all the advance hype.

In the Mood for Love (2000) Margaret Pomeranz The journey we take in this film with these two fairly inaccessible people is amazingly powerful. It's hard to pinpoint just how Wong does it.

Mulholland Dr. (2001) David Stratton The real star of Mulholland Drive is Lynch and his extraordinary vision of the world.

Magnolia (1999) David Stratton A disappointment after the excellent Hard Eight and Boogie Nights. The stories themselves aren't all that involving (comparisons with Short Cuts are inevitable), and the film's at least an hour too long.

Godzilla (1998) David Stratton The much-heralded new Godzilla is not much of an advance on the earlier one. The big lizard looks like a refugee from Jurassic Park, his offspring have strayed in from Aliens, and the humans are a terribly insipid bunch of no-hopers.

The Truman Show (1998) David Stratton The casting of Jim Carrey was a masterstroke... the result is a brilliant, and touching performance unlike anything Carrey has done before.

Eve's Bayou (1997) Margaret Pomeranz This is a fine film, it`s nicely written and excellently photographed by Amy Vincent.

Gladiator (2000) Margaret Pomeranz It is gripping stuff, with Russell Crowe so muscular and heroic in the central role and Joaquin Phoenix giving a really interesting interpretation to Commodus.

L.A. Confidential (1997) David Stratton Dante Spinotti's widescreen camerawork and Jeannine Oppewall`s production design brilliantly recreate the somewhat tawdry world of a glamorous city which is starting to lose its glamour.

Tenet (2020) Jason Di Rosso Tenet is clearly attempting some kind of emotional payoff that remains out of reach. By the end, the idea of swimming against the current feels like a metaphor for the film itself.

Mercury Rising (1998) Margaret Pomeranz I must admit I was underwhelmed by Mercury Rising - in fact the temperature actually sank.

The Story of Us (1999) Margaret Pomeranz I actually found the film very moving, very honest, except maybe for its resolution.

Pulp Fiction (1994) David Stratton Pacey, punchy and at times hilarious. It's quite a movie.

Pulp Fiction (1994) Margaret Pomeranz I was looking forward to this like you wouldn't believe... but it all goes on for so long and it's not terribly witty.

Event Horizon (1997) David Stratton [Anderson] has little feeling for suspense - instead he lays on the violence and gore with a trowel and diminishing returns are the result.

Species (1995) Margaret Pomeranz I must admit I really enjoyed Species. I like being manipulated by a clever director, even though it isn't the best of its genre.

Species (1995) David Stratton It's a lot of fun. It's certainly well directed. We've seen it all before, but I enjoyed it.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) Margaret Pomeranz [It's] something that is intensely interesting for most of us yuppies.
      Posted Feb 16, 2018
Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) David Stratton I was disappointed. I think it's been overhyped and I can't understand why people rave about it the way they do.

Wings of Desire (1987) David Stratton A stunningly made valentine to the city of Berlin, which has never been more imaginatively or more beautifully filmed. A joy from start to finish.

Romper Stomper (1992) David Stratton In these volatile times, with racism on the march again all over the world, this is a dangerous film.

      4.5/5
Romper Stomper (1992) Margaret Pomeranz This is in no way a pleasant film experience. It is relentlessly psychologically violent, almost nauseatingly so on occasion. However it is one of the finest films to be made in this country in recent years.

Gallipoli (1981) Margaret Pomeranz It moved me so terribly.

Sample People (2000) Margaret Pomeranz Writer/director Clinton Smith has chosen a hyped-up reality look in terms of colours and angles, that matches his inner-city drug-laden music-driven material.

L'Avventura (1960) David Stratton Antonioni's cool, beautifully photographed film isn't really a mystery and certainly not a thriller. Audiences over the years have delighted in deciding what it really is all about.

L'Avventura (1960) Margaret Pomeranz The film just looks great. That black and white cinematography is just divine.

The Madness of King George (1994) David Stratton Visually sumptuous, energetic and classy, The Madness of King George is British film theatre at its most seductive.

Dead Man Walking (1995) Margaret Pomeranz It doesn't flinch from presenting the crime committed, and yet, it's a film that undoubtedly is against capital punishment.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) David Stratton I think it is visually exciting. I think there are wonderful things in it but I just missed that innocence of the early films.

Casino Royale (2006) Margaret Pomeranz This is a much more serious Bond than we've seen in many years. Daniel Craig inhabits the dark side of the secret agent really well, he is absolutely the best Bond since Connery.

Casino Royale (2006) David Stratton I think this is a very intelligent film for a Bond film, and certainly one of the most enjoyable.

Quantum of Solace (2008) Margaret Pomeranz I also was really disappointed in the villain in this because I just felt I could blow him over with a little puff of air, and that's not a good feeling with a Bond movie.

WALL-E (2008) Margaret Pomeranz To carry the film for as long as it does with virtually no dialogue... that's to me the magic of animation.
