A Simple Favor Reviews

September 24, 2018
A deeply confused movie that feels like a mash-up of Mean Girls and an episode of Law and Order.

With its saucy French pop music and pastel Saul Bass-inspired credits, this film is so hungry to seem like a classic thriller that you come away charmed by its pure-hearted ambition.

Until an ending that flies ruinously off the rails, Paul Feig's bouncy comedy-thriller brings out the scrappy best in Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively and offers an unexpected take on the twists and turns of female friendship.

The performances by Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are so invigorating, so generous with pointed inflections and snappy gestures, that they fill the movie's good-humored, amply plotted emptiness.
September 14, 2018
Director Paul Feig doesn't seem able to decide whether he's making a slightly outré crime comedy, a blithely twisted relationship thriller, a brightly lit horror melodrama, or maybe an arch meta-take on all three.

A Simple Favor seems to yearn for a bygone era of nail-biter, but rather than wallow in pastiche, it comes up with something truly contemporary feeling.
September 14, 2018
It's gratifying to see Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick both earning their keep in director Paul Feig's borderline-nutso crime comedy, one that won't be confused for a new Gone Girl. But even second-rate trashy turnarounds are worth savoring.

What a relief to watch a film unafraid of letting its hair down.

Its mystery elements are infused with a uniquely Feig-ian sensibility, equal parts broad comedy and ironic winks.

An often lighthearted, sometimes creepy journey through the female stereotypes of the genre, with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively as guides who both delight in and subvert traditional noir archetypes.

As bright and bracing as an ice-cold gin martini with a lemon twist, and just as satisfying.

A Simple Favor reintroduces Lively as a character actress-a sexy, funny, award-worthy revelation.
September 13, 2018
Sly and sweet with an acid finish, "A Simple Favor" is a female-friendship comedy with neo-noir ambitions.
September 13, 2018
Feig seems to be having a lot fun with material; it's debatable whether his enjoyment translates to the audience.

Ice cold and finished off with a dramatic twist, "A Simple Favor" has a lot in common with the gin martinis that its lead characters drink throughout the film.

It all makes for one of the more twisted, circuitous and silly capers in recent memory.
September 13, 2018
Kendrick's interplay with Lively crackles, whether they're going for laughs or something darker. Both are big selling points - as is their director, even if it's not as advertised.

September 12, 2018
Feig, better known for straight-up comedy, draws out the movie's early acts deliciously, letting the actors play with their roles and creating a near-Hitchcockian tone of slinky ominousness, cut with the driest of wit.

If your tastes in crime fiction lean more toward whiskey-soaked detectives, A Simple Favor might be bubbly enough to give you a headache despite the darkness of its themes. But that's okay. More prosecco for the rest of us.

It's a lot of fun . . . until it becomes a mystery thriller so convoluted and tonally wacky, Angela Lansbury would have quit in a huff.

"Favor" is packed with jokes, most very funny. The ones that are not as funny usually land anyway, thanks to Kendrick's sly delivery and Lively's blithe way with a putdown.

At times we can only laugh at how ridiculous A Simple Favor becomes - but that's OK, because the film has beat us to the punch and is inviting us to have fun with it. Invitation accepted.

So it's something of a shock when the plot's inciting incident sends the movie into thriller-mechanics territory that's never as fun, and practically hobbles A Simple Favor from ever regaining its delightful first-act edge.
September 11, 2018
Is extreme turbulence in a film an alluring selling point or a troubling sign that the director has lost control? For this subversive mystery, the answer is a hearty yes to both.
September 11, 2018
For all its ludicrous plot twists and a mystery that falls too conveniently into place, "A Simple Favor" is just fun. It's light and frothy. Secrets are revealed, great-looking people wear fabulous clothes, and it's all perfectly twisty and engrossing.

A Simple Favor is compulsively watchable, a downmarket spin on Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train that is enthralling mostly because it's never clear what the hell is going to happen next.

The movie never sheds its aura of talented people trying to class up cheap material.

A Simple Favor is a sinuous thriller with as many twists and turns as a mountain road.

The film feels a lot like the Serge Gainsbourg number that Stephanie dances to in the kitchen: jazzy, a little sleazy, and worth a cult following
