See more Donavin D @Hiyromedia Nov 23 Borat is one of the weirdest, most completely insensitive films I think I have ever watched and I cry laughing almost every minute of it. Its enduring style, fantastic character work by Sacha Baron Cohen and memorable lines/moments cement this as one of the best and funniest comedies ever made. From start to finish the film has no interest in taking itself, or anything it critiques, too seriously — opting to just throw this character they have created out into the world and let Cohen do his thing and it is all the better for it. The film combines scripted moments alongside real situations engaging with people and while the real moments are far and away the better of the two scenarios, it does have a high enough quality writing that makes everything a consistent laugh. The overarching story is paper thin and mostly acts as a vehicle to get him from funny set up A to funny set up B but its a sacrifice that I think works in favor of the movies looser, mockumentary approach. This film won’t be for everyone—some moments, like many from older movies, haven’t aged particularly well. But if you can appreciate it in the context of its time, it’s absolutely something you shouldn’t miss. You can’t really categorize it as a traditional movie because, in truth, it’s more of a chaotic social experiment disguised as a comedy. But it’s impossible to deny that it delivers a kind of cinematic experience unlike anything else. It honestly feels like the writers were either high on something or just completely unfiltered when putting this script together—because there’s no logical way a concept this wild made it through without someone asking, “Wait, what are we doing here?” But that’s part of the brilliance. It’s stupid, yes, but it’s the kind of stupidity that takes real creativity to pull off. The director deserves credit for taking this completely off-the-wall character and shaping it into a phenomenon. Sacha Baron Cohen gives a fearless, committed performance as Borat Sagdiyev, a clueless journalist from Kazakhstan who embarks on a journey through America. What makes it so funny is that much of it feels improvised, blending real interactions with staged chaos, and Cohen never once breaks character. It’s this dedication that transforms Borat from a silly character sketch into a lasting pop-culture icon. That neon-green mankini alone became a symbol of the film’s outrageous humor and unforgettable absurdity. Sure, it’s filled with stupid jokes, excessive cameos, and humor that’s about as subtle as a hammer to the head—but that’s the point. Borat isn’t trying to be polished or profound. It’s trying to push boundaries, make you uncomfortable, and make you laugh at how ridiculous everything is. And it succeeds at all three. It’s not what anyone would call a cinematic masterpiece, but it’s absolutely a creative one.
