The shaky-cam style adds immersion, but it also becomes exhausting and hides some of the film’s strongest visual ideas. The concept is great, the execution is uneven, and the characters don’t leave much impact. Still, it delivers solid thrills and a memorable atmosphere. See more Iman B Nov 24 While the movie works extremely well overall, there are two issues that stood out to me as mistakes or lapses in judgment. I want to start by saying that Cloverfield handles almost everything beautifully—the plot is fantastic, the characters are well-developed, the directing is impressive, and the VFX truly deliver. Throughout the film, you feel completely pulled into the story. I was genuinely shocked when the head of the Statue of Liberty came crashing down in the middle of the street. It’s a terrifying moment, but it also signals that something truly serious is happening and that the characters have no choice but to face it. Cloverfield builds fear and suspense incredibly well, and if you haven’t seen it yet, it definitely deserves a place on your watch list. That said, I found two major issues. The first one, in my opinion, involves ethics. Over the last 25 years, I’ve watched a lot of films, and I’ve noticed that many of them seem to be losing something—our social and moral values. No one seems to care about ethical principles anymore, and since cinema and society reflect each other, I think the way characters behave in movies can influence how we think in real life. What I’m getting at is Rob’s decision to rescue Beth. In doing so, he puts everyone else in danger, and several of them die before Rob and Beth do. Some may say that Rob told them not to come with him, but realistically, what kind of friend abandons others in a situation like that? Of course they are going to follow him, which makes him responsible for their deaths. What kind of person does that? The second issue is in the narrative. From the beginning, Hud is the one operating the camera, and we see everything from his point of view. But about five minutes before the end, Hud dies, and Rob suddenly becomes the camera operator. To me, changing the "narrator" breaks the structure. If you begin with someone’s perspective, you should end with it. It feels like the writer or director simply wanted Rob and Beth to be the final victims for personal or emotional reasons—because an attractive couple dying at the end tends to evoke stronger feelings, especially for younger audiences. In my view, this is a mistake. Hud should have stayed alive until the end, or the ending should have been handled differently. There were plenty of ways to end the film without killing Hud. But the purpose of this is to contrast their mundane lives with breakneck insanity to come. And believe me, when it lands, this movie kicks like few before it. See more Kasey L Aug 13 The worst movie I have ever seen, the dumbest characters, zero logic, maybe 3 combined brain cells of all the characters. The stupid camera man following rob running towards the monster, going into the subway and just chilling there, no plot, horrible ending, I’d get further than them by crawling on the floor then later I’d be chilling drinking a cup of tea while they’re doing dumb stuff, idc if it’s my best friend if he wants to go out towards the monster, guns, bombs, he can do that and ima js tell him straight up that he’s gonna die then leave his dumabss.
