critics consensus
Hobbs & Shaw doesn't rev as high as the franchise's best installments, but gets decent mileage out of its well-matched stars and over-the-top action sequences. Read critic reviews

Jan 12, 2020Godamn what happened to these movies. Starting with low rent Point Break we're now at a movie that honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this started out as a script for G.I. Joe 3. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just be prepared, it's ridiculous, on par with the level of insanity we see in most superhero movies these days. The problems that arise there is there are some prolonged sequences that are so riddled with CGI is basically watching a cartoon or a video game cutscene. Now, I like cartoons, hell I even like some video game cutscenes, but with those there's a consistency in knowing what you're getting compared to the rest of the product. Here, the movie's really at it's best when the effects stay real and even a little more grounded. They can still be ridiculous over-the-top fun, but once it becomes a cartoon it started to lose me. That being said, the action in this is still a helluva lot of fun, and Idris Elba makes good villain. The final sequence of old tech vs new tech is genuinely great, and unlike anything I've see in one of these Fast movies before. And yeah, the dynamic of Hobbs and Shaw is a lot of fun, playing off the toxic alpha personalities the two of them both possess. It's not the best of the F&F films, but it's a solid entry in ridiculousness.Michael M Super Reviewer

Dec 30, 2019Yeah, sure, fuck it, why not, hey? I mean the Fast & Furious franchise was already dipping into some sci-fi elements, why not just whole-hog dive into it for your spinoff? Dumb as dogshit, but might genuinely be the best thing Fast & Furious has ever produced. Has cars in it, but stops bothering to try and pretend racing them is actually important to the story.

Oct 22, 2019Summer actioner that pretty much hits what it's aiming for without a great deal of fuss. Say to yourself that it's only a movie and the filmmakers themselves will probably shrug and agree with you. Which is to say that there's no surprises here. In typical buddy cop movie fashion the stars HATE each other at the opening. How will they feel by the ending? Like you didn't know.

Oct 16, 2019Good chemistry for the leads, but a film that even includes the kitchen sink is hard to love. The franchise finally avoids the usual central characters and expands from the best of the best. Johnson and Statham deliver. They are the key to this films success and were the best part of the last Fast and Furious sequel. The biggest issue this film had was the budget. Too much. It should've been dialled back slightly and not had so many set pieces. These actors a physical and stunt work was a better option. As an expanded spin off it's serviceable and crowd pleasing. I think they could continue this spin off but they need to readjust some of the storyline to avoid falling into the same problems with the core franchise. Big and dumb, but very funny film. 06/08/2019Brendan N Super Reviewer
