Initially a tinglingly edgy and realistic portrait of girl power in an age when female sexuality was considered an unclear but present danger to society, this frustratingly unravels over 143 minutes into something increasingly woolly and unconvincing. Go to Full Review

A handsomely mounted but strangely prosaic period piece. Go to Full Review

There's a ... sense that the drama based on Joyce Carol Oates' 1950-set novel is being explored by young women actually living the experiences of pushing back against a world they feel is determined to hold them down. Go to Full Review

Whereas Cantet's decision to use non-professional actors paid dividends in The Class, it seems to have quite the opposite effect on this occasion, with few of the young performers leaving much of a mark. Go to Full Review

It builds a rather convoluted bridge to nowhere. Go to Full Review

Tighter editing could have elevated this from a respectable adaptation into something with an incisive edge, but at least it's a better take on the book than the misguided 1996 version ... Go to Full Review

Claudio C @Claudio666 May 1 Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang (2012) Pointless and Too Long (12,420 – 01 May 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In the 50’s, in Hammond, NY, the rebel Legs (Raven Adamson) runs away home to the house of her friend Maddy (Katie Coseni). She joins three other girls and create the gang Foxfire to fight men and create havoc in town. They tattoo a flame on their shoulders and Maddy buys a typewriter to record their achievements. Soon they escalate in their crimes from pranks to thefts and kidnapping. "Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang" (2012) is a pointless and too long movie (143 min. running time) based on the 1951 novel by Anya Seton. The plot follows Legs and probably in the 50’s, it was a novel ahead of time. But the story in 2026 is aimless. My vote is six. Title (Brazi): "Foxfire: Confissões de uma Gangue de Garotas" ("Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang") My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ See more 08/12/2018 You know those movies that are both entertaining but important also? Well, I think this is an important movie for girls and women to see in the sense it reveals society's discrimination against 'the weaker sex,' with everything from appealing clothes they should wear, the indoctrination into girlhood and womanhood, and the subservient role many females play in a male-dominated society. See more 09/09/2014 Raven Adamson as Legs is killing it! She's really charming, and brought her character effortlessly. Cool movie! See more 08/24/2014 I struggled to stay interested in this. The lack of experience in the cast really shows. Good Timber Timbre soundtrack though! See more 07/13/2014 A reasonable but long and slow film and I found the subject quite irritating. Definitley not one I would want to see again but was worth watching just the once. See more 05/03/2014 This French-British-Canadian drama written and directed by Laurent Cantet, is the second film adaptation of the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang (1993), after the Annette Haywood-Carter's version in 1996. The cast included very talented young actors, Katie Coseni as Madeleine (Maddy, Wirtz), Raven Adamson as Margaret (Legs, Sadovsky), Madeleine Bisson as Rita O'Hagan, Claire Mazerolle as Goldie, Paige Moyles as Lana, Rachael Nyhuus as Violet Kahn, Lindsay Rolland-Mills as VV... and all of them were very refreshing to watch. The 143 minutes long feminist story is happening in the United States in 1955, and five girls from the local school decide to organize themselves in a gang in order to fight against the treatment of females and the influence of men over women. The length of the story could be shorter for at least 15 minutes without losing much of it. I liked the recreation of the era which was amazingly successful. On the other hand the feel of the movie was that is, as I already mentioned, overlong and sometimes relies on the force rather than reasoning for solution of the problems which becomes boring because simply repeats itself, over and over! If you are ready for a different "growing up" story of not so common teenagers which becomes stale towards the end, check it out, if you must! See more Read all reviews
