Melanie D @PPSS2023 Jan 14 Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween sadly just doesn't land as well as the previous movie. It also has practically no connection to it either, expect from a passing reference. The only returning characters/actors are Jack Black as R.L Stine(And he gets a very small amount of screen time, and isn't even relevant to the plot) and Slappy the Dummy as the villain. The other characters and setting are completely new, and theses characters don't have the same charm as the originals. This is also clearly directed at a younger audience despite having the same rating, and a lot of the creepy feeling of the original is gone, and a lot isn't even based on the books. Overall, quite disappointing. While the movie certainly understands its target audience—young kids who want harmless Halloween thrills—it struggles to find a balance that can appeal to older viewers as well. The first Goosebumps movie managed to be entertaining for both children and adults, but this sequel leans heavily into the “kids-only” lane, losing much of the charm and cleverness that made the original stand out. From a storytelling standpoint, the screenplay feels extremely light and lacks the wit or structure that could’ve made it more engaging for a broader audience. It’s clear that the intent was to craft something playful and accessible for younger viewers, and in that regard, the film succeeds. But as an adult watching it, it often feels like you’re sitting through an overly extended Nickelodeon special rather than a theatrical feature. The humor, pacing, and dialogue all cater exclusively to a young crowd, leaving little for older audiences to latch onto. That said, there are a few redeeming elements. The director does make an effort to focus on the right characters, especially Slappy the Dummy, who remains the franchise’s most recognizable and entertaining villain. Slappy’s design is genuinely well-executed—his creepy grin, expressive features, and sinister personality help inject the film with some much-needed energy whenever he’s on-screen. He’s the highlight of an otherwise bland sequel, providing both nostalgia and a bit of fun chaos. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast doesn’t bring much to the table. The young leads are serviceable but never truly memorable, and the performances often feel exaggerated in a way that makes the film even more cartoonish. The mother character, in particular, crosses into overacting territory, giving off strong children’s TV energy that doesn’t fit the tone of a theatrically released movie. In a Nickelodeon series or Disney Channel original film, that level of performance might work—but here, it just feels misplaced. As for the visuals and effects, they’re decent for a family film, with some fun monster moments that will likely entertain younger viewers. Still, the story itself is forgettable and lacks the inventiveness or heart that could’ve elevated it beyond standard kid-friendly fluff. The pacing also doesn’t help—it drags in parts and rushes through others, giving the impression that the filmmakers weren’t quite sure how to balance their Halloween chaos with coherent storytelling. To its credit, the movie does connect back to the first Goosebumps film by the end, which gives it a small sense of continuity for fans who’ve followed the series. But even that connection isn’t enough to make this sequel feel necessary or impactful. It’s the kind of film you watch once, maybe twice, and then completely forget about. In the end, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween isn’t unwatchable—it’s just painfully average. Kids under twelve will probably enjoy the silly monsters and colorful chaos, but anyone over eighteen will likely feel talked down to. It’s a harmless Halloween distraction, but not one that leaves a lasting impression. For adults who grew up with R.L.
