11/14/2007 Directed by Edward Valibus Phillips, "Grim Sweeper" is a film that, sadly, flew under the radar. An independent flick filmed in and around Memphis, TN, the movie raises serious questions about our society and how we deal with death and grief. Hal is employed at 'Grim Sweeper', a cleaning company that doesn't clean as much "restore" the area of a loved ones death. Hal offers little comfort to his clients. It seems that he is just as much a mess as them, if not more. Until he meets Leslie, a client who has just lost her brother to suicide. A romance ensues between the two and through it all, they both must learn how to move on and live their lives. Don't be fooled by the above synopsis. "Grim Sweeper" relishes in its sense of fun and humor, and the movie - which could've come across as a sick drama - manages to find laughter in all of the muck. Phillips, aside from directing and co-writing, also stars as Hal. As much as I enjoy his film, it was hard for me to enjoy his performance. He delivers several of his lines with no emotion; depression does not come to mind when you see this performance. It borerlines boredom on several occasions. However, behind the camera, one can not deny that Phillips is gifted. Natalie Horbelt is Leslie, and - for the most part - she handles the role nicely. She has an ease on screen that can only be natural, and when she and Phillips share the screen, the chemistry is undeniable. The real scene stealer of the film is Benjamen Rednour, who plays Hal's comic sidekick. His performance, while definately NOT flawless, is undeniably funny and has a way with one liners. "Grim Sweeper" was, for me, an enjoyable watch. It's an engaging dark( romantic?) comedy that rises above its flaws and uses its talented cast and crew to its advantage. Highly recommended.
