"Handsome Devil" studies formulaic coming-of-age movies a little too closely.
The sweetness, poignancy and breezy humor of this Emerald Isle bildungsroman also make it pretty darn impossible to resist.
Although the film can feel a bit been-there-seen-that, this earnest, well-drawn tale ultimately proves distinct and winning enough to warrant a look.
The flick teeters between feel-good message movie and a burlesque of gay panic ...
It's a decent movie, though sometimes becomes a bit sugary, and it's not clear if the comedy is supposed to be rooted in realistic observation or sentimental feelgoodery.
Heavy-handed at times, but this is a sweet story honestly told.
Writer/director John Butler has crafted a feel good film that overcomes a fairly predictable plot with winning performances.
It is without a doubt one of the feel good films of the year.
Get back to me when you're ready to move beyond middling after-school specials like "Handsome Devil," MiFo peeps. There's still some growing up left to do.
... "Handsome Devil" is a lively gay romance, even though it isn't all that romantic.
It's a premise we've seen dozens of times before, in a variety of guises, but writer-director John Butler injects his own highly personal take with lashings of Irish humour and a gutsy helping of genuine heart and emotion.
Using music to define gay experience in a prep school setting makes Handsome Devil a queer version of Wes Anderson's Rushmore.
"Handsome Devil" is a sweet and charming bildungsroman for the LGBT set, with more than competent production. You may smile, if you allow yourself to do so.
Whilst you can easily write this off an Irish version of Dead's Poet Society, it is so much more than that. With character depth and a topic that provides a few twists, this is one of the better coming of age dramas in a while.
Handsome Devil is a mixed bag in all aspects. The acting ranges from stellar to mediocre, the gags are hit & miss, and the moments are either stellar or impactless.
