Fortunately for Kapoor, the performances manage to keep things afloat, taking the emotions to a crescendo matching nature's wrath.

In a film which features flash floods, it's the love story that becomes the disaster. Kedarnath, is indeed a calamity.

The second half has so much stuffed into into it that little makes an impact - including the flood. The narrative races choppily from one disconnected scene to another.

There are many such noble, sensible, contemporary and contentious issues that Kedarnath tries to raise but they somehow get buried in a wishy-washy script that hurtles towards a clumsy, protracted climax.

Given the current climate, these inclinations aren't surprising. After all, you know a film is on shaky ground when it's a natural disaster that must rescue it from being a man-made disaster.

Kedarnath is a pointless, entirely forgettable film, but some may remember the girl fondly - which may well be the film's only task.

Despite the brisk storytelling and nicely braided scenes that give a vivid sense of the locations, Kedarnath never achieves the emotional peak that is a requirement of the disaster movie.

What gives Kedarnath a further edge is the solid cast, toplined by the aching chemistry between the lead pair.

For a film that ebbs and flows, the leads thankfully keep it afloat and steady. Rajput is wonderful as Mansoor, using his eyes and body language to convincingly convey his character's emotions. But the true revelation is Khan.

In trying to please everyone, the film loses edge, and leads to a tepid cop-out. It's a weepie minus the tears.

Kedarnath dazzles you with its scenic imagery and it's fresh pairing. But it's also a case of missed chances.

Kedarnath is perfectly stormy and is good for a one-time watch.

The clever use of CGI mixed with live-action shots to depict moments like cloudburst and the pilgrim city submerging underwater creates an authentic impact. The execution in these areas, along with a memorable debut by Sara, is what keeps the film afloat.
