Disturbing look at racism, with a nasty performance from Hopper.
Good but not great work by Dennis Hopper and Ed Harris. They try but the script does not provide them with enough to work with.
So this is what someone's view of racism in the South looks like? This movie is a failure on every level. All of the characters are one-dimensional stereotypes.
This film was ignored when it was released & I am unsurprised to see it only has 44 ratings. I'm not sure that it's even available in most DVD libraries but if you see it, grab a copy. But, be warned. This is a seriously disturbing film with one of the worst sexual violence scenes I have ever witnessed. If you thought Hopper was compelling as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet then you are in for a big dose of deja-vu. Hopper's racist, violent, sociopathic loansharking character is every bit as frightening & every bit as compelling. Ever wondered what Frank Booth would be like if he had real social power? A wife? Here is the opportunity to find out.
Well put together. It does so much right technically in front and behind the camera. So where's the problem? Well...for all it's strengths in the storytelling, it's too ugly a film to be considered entertainment.
Hopper gives a great and chilling performance but the movie is just too boring.
Under-rated modern classic is compelling every step of the way! Violent shooting sequences are so vividly done they take you right out of your seat! Extremely distrubing and oddly erotic at times, makes this film rather unique as well! Searing performance by well-cast Hopper and usually strong performances by Harris and Hershey match a razor-sharp script. Utterly realistic and unforgettable! Not to be missed.
Dennis Hopper manages to create one of the most despicable villains ever supported by great performances by Hershey and Harris.
There was a time that I considered Dennis Hopper a fantastic actor, but then I realized that he almost always plays the same character. This is a heavy, intense, crazy character profile where Hopper is merely imitating some of Jack Nicholson's famous crazies.
Harrowing drama about the mind and soul of an unrepentant racist. Dennis Hopper gives one of his finest performances. Director Stephen Gyllenhaal displays an excellent command of the medium. Pete Dexter adapted his own novel.
