Run All Night

Critics Consensus

Liam Neeson is in typically fine form, but Run All Night suffers from a convoluted plot and workmanlike execution.

  • If you appreciate this kind of guff, then Run All Night, despite its slow spots, is a fairly good yarn.

  • In the main, Jaume Collet-Serra is making a character-driven drama about betrayed honor, and the result is a film closer in spirit to the baggage-rich crime novels of Dennis Lehane than dumb multiplex fare.

  • Run All Night is a taut, edgy affair that features Neeson in peak action form and allows him to partially atone for the indignity of Taken 3.

  • There are more phones than female characters, who spend the movie comatose in hospital beds, fretting silently in the background or being hugged through a doorway

  • With all due respect for Harris's ability to overact even while underacting, and given the hour-plus of citywide demolition, the stakes for the action here are awfully low.

  • The third collaboration between Neeson and Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra is made almost endurable by excellent acting from Neeson (his wounded eyes are hypnotic) along with Ed Harris, as Jimmy's mercurial boss Shawn.

In his third collaboration with Liam Neeson (who is great in his badass persona), Collet-Serra does play the exhibitionist sometimes, but at least he manages to make this average movie dynamic and fresh despite all of its expository dialogue and how forgettable it is.

Another solid Liam Neeson action/thriller, Full of some good solid action scenes that are done well, The plot isn't nothing new but all the cast were great, I thought the ending was ok but the whole film turned too much into a regular action film and left the suspense out, Much better than Taken 2 and 3 though.

It was actually pretty interesting and thrilling, but if it has Liam Neeson, the bars are high.

Liam Neeson clearly feels comfortable in the niche he has carved out for himself in his career of late. Leading man of the Taken franchise, he is clearly content to fill in the gaps between these films with similarly themed action films with a troubled protagonist leading the charge. Without ever needing to try too hard, mostly thanks to Neeson's effortless everyman sensibilities that anchor this flick, Run All Night falls right into this all-too-familiar moviemaking trope; content to offer nothing new to the genre, but strangely pulling off an entertaining guilty-pleasure experience.
