Bret M. @BretM-3 Mar 6 Kong: Skull Island is a brilliant spectacle. It is a beautiful movie. The color-grading of the movie is nice and creates a yellowish-green hue for the movie that fits perfectly with the vibe of the movie. All the CGI is very on point and never once while watching this film did I feel like anything looked fake or unrealistic. Kong in particular looks amazing, especially during the helicopter sequence. The cast is also great. Samuel L. Jackson does a great performance as Col. Packard and really gives off the idea that he is slowly descending into madness over his hatred for Kong. Tom Hiddleston's character of James Conrad feels a little flat and generic. He feels like your regular run-of-the-mill action-hero mercenary. Brie Larson is okay as Mason Weaver. She had a tendency to get on my nerves, but not a major problem. Another complaint I have is that it feels like there are to many human characters. Scientists, soldiers, mercenaries, photographers. Unfortunately I feel the humans take up too much of the screen time and don't leave enough time for Kong. But every time Kong is on screen, you feel his presence. The Skullcrawlers are very cool and make for cool antagonistic Kaijus for Kong to fight. And the final battle does not disappoint! John C Reilly is another standout as Hank Marlow. He's a very likable character. He's funny when he needs to be funny and serious when he needs to be serious. And the scene during the credits is very heartwarming. What a wasted potential. I mean: It is not THAT bad, but with all those great actors, it could have done more. Instead we have a very simple writing and veeeery simple dialogue covered with good settings and graphics. Still, there is so much, I was angry about. Like Vietnam Fighters acting plain stupid. All the vietnam war gear, machinery, and attitude, this movie pretty much nailed it. The plot and personally I consider this one of the best Kong movies! The one before was good too! But this movie also has John Goodman, fuckin legend! One action packed scene after the other and the resilience of the characters really makes this movie worth watching. You won't regret it!
