See more BRizz 2 @TheMovieSearch Aug 10 Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland is basically a reheated version of Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers—same formula, same kind of kills, and unfortunately, the same lack of real creativity. It feels like the script was written by following the second film beat-for-beat, without trying to add much new to the mix. Angela’s return is probably the film’s biggest selling point. Pamela Springsteen is back in the role, playing it with that same overly perky-yet-psychotic charm. The movie even references the events of Unhappy Campers, which is a nice nod to continuity. But looking at the series as a whole, it’s a little strange how the character’s origins shift—from Peter, a boy in the first film (played by a male actor), to being portrayed in the sequels entirely by a biological woman. The retcon about a sex change between films is a bizarre choice, and when you connect the dots across the trilogy, it doesn’t exactly line up smoothly. Casting aside, Teenage Wasteland suffers from the same problem as its predecessor: the kills, while sometimes mildly amusing, aren’t particularly inventive, and the pacing often drags. There’s the expected ’80s horror movie staples—plenty of nudity, crude jokes, and over-the-top gore—but it never quite hits that “so bad it’s good” sweet spot like the second film did for me. Ultimately, it’s a weaker follow-up that leans too hard on recycled ideas and shock value. Fans of cheesy ’80s slashers might still find something to enjoy here, but it lacks the campy fun that made Unhappy Campers at least borderline entertaining.
