Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) 01/05/2019
Watch [Strange Colours] in a double bill with Wake in Fright to see just how different the outback can seem - charmingly eccentric one day, utterly terrifying the next - just by tilting your head in a certain way. Go to Full Review
David Stratton The Australian 11/26/2018

A very specific sense of place comes across strongly in Lodkina's minimalist yet striking film. Go to Full Review
Luke Buckmaster Guardian 11/23/2018

It is tantalising to consider what the director might come up with working with a more pronounced narrative. But subsequent films made in the style of Strange Colours are also an exciting proposition. Go to Full Review
Jim Schembri 3AW 11/25/2018
3.5/5
A remarkable first feature from Alena Lodkina [but] as with too many Australian films, it has dropped into cinemas suddenly and with almost no fanfare. Regrettably, it is likely to drop out in much the same manner. Go to Full Review
Craig Mathieson The Sunday Age 11/21/2018
4/5
From the quietly exhilarating first cut - the pristine night sky above to an otherworldly mechanical excavation below ground - Strange Colours reveals a natural filmmaker who brings her own vision to the Australian landscape. Go to Full Review
Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film 11/21/2018

01/29/2020 Quiet, eerie, surface-bleak...and oh so very Australian. In the hands of a lesser cast and crew, who are all the more striking for being relative unknowns, this would have been a boring, plodding failure, yet it comes to life slowly, deliberately, and with great determination to just BE. We could do with a couple more like it. See more 11/24/2018 Beautiful and moody images of Lightning Ridge contrasting bush and mullock heaps. Haunting sounds of the bush accompanied by minimal intrusion from a well integrated musical score. Personal relationships explored with many questions but few answers. An engaging performance from the cast creates the essence of a community that accepts the stranger without asking too many questions, and explores the transition from estrangement to acceptance between father and daughter.
