Spider-man's new costume looks swell, and Emma Stone is charming. Those are the only two things about The Amazing Spider-man 2 I didn't hate with the fiery anger of a thousand exploding suns.

The Amazing Spider-man 2 can serve to entertain, especially if you love 3D and special effects interspersed with the occasional expertly acted scene.

Plodding and overstuffed where it should be light and nimble, feeling more like a product than a labor of love.

It's fun, but nothing more.

While it shares problems with its predecessor, it also confirms Garfield as the very best big screen iteration of Spidey. What's more, there's even perhaps an argument that he's the strongest of all of Marvel's movie misfits.

The fifth web slinger film since 2002 (the second in this reboot) is overstuffed with plot threads flying everywhere, but there is just enough there to keep the series alive.

The movie may be lacking focus, overstuffed and overlong (2.5 hours), but I didn't find the changing tone distracting.

Garfield's turn as Peter Parker is unbearably mannered and close to unwatchable at times. It's almost as if he's over-demonstrating the awkward, underdog charm of Parker.

So in settling with Webb's overstuffed superhero saga The Amazing Spider-Man 2 you are automatically conditioned to use your own Spidey senses to embrace another repetitive round of the webhead's angst-ridden heroism.

Has a few too many balls in the air, and a few too many plot threads randomly started or abruptly ended. It feels at times like two separate movies awkwardly scotch-taped together.

The first reboot had heart, which helped it live up to the claim of being an amazing Spider-Man. It's just a shame this isn't an amazing Spider-Man too.

For every moment that [The Amazing Spider-Man 2] gets blatantly wrong, it has another moment of heart or greatness which saves the film from plummeting into Batman & Robin territory.

There's nothing heroic about close-talking.
August 14, 2018
A thoroughly enjoyable watch and even a bit heartbreaking.

Is it perfect? NO. Is it better than the first one? Possibly. Will EVERYONE be happy? Hell No. Will it entertain the majority? Most likely.
March 3, 2018
The problem with having all these plots is that nothing has enough time. Everything feels rushed.
