Critics Consensus

Though somewhat overwhelmed by its own spectacle, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies ends Peter Jackson's second Middle-earth trilogy on a reasonably satisfying note.

While the action scenes are eye-popping, for me the film becomes something special in stiller moments, with the megalomaniac Thorin raving, questioning, justifying, swerving towards evil. Go to Full Review

This is comfortably straightforward hokum -- which is to say that Jackson, for all his delusions of grandeur, remains a bit of a hobbit at heart. Go to Full Review

With some of the most exciting hand-to-hand combat I've ever seen portrayed onscreen the final film in "The Hobbit" trilogy really delivers the goods. Go to Full Review

The final half of the film, which is already the third film in the telling, is an enormous battle and, yes, it is impressive as a physical thing. It’s also exhausting and overdone ... Go to Full Review

Even if you think the movie studio was milking you for three movie tickets over three years out of a book that probably could have fit into a single film, you now get to see your patience rewarded and your virtue justified. Go to Full Review

It’s a tighter and more focused movie and runs 20 minutes shorter than either of the first two Hobbit films. More importantly it feels in tune with the previous movies and offers us an exciting and fitting conclusion filled with great action and emotion. Go to Full Review

Ben B. @Boldbravebigbenbrown 1d No film can ever come in ahead of, or even close to on par with the original LOTR trilogy, but Jackson did A LOT (with the aid of a gargantuan budget) to position this as a Tolkien adaptation that holds its own in Middle Earth canon. A stunning cast and tight storyline keep the viewer excited and anticipating about what's around each new corner. The visual and practical effects are fantastic, and the script is well thought out and remarkably true to the novel on many levels. I know this movie is a classic because my 5, 8, and 10-yr-old boys were glued until the final scene fades out and bouncing in their seats with excitement during its most intense scenes. This film was done thoughtfully and intensely and is an important part of the film versions of the Tolkien epic. Watch this with your kids while your Tolkien-scholar wife makes cupcakes in the kitchen. See more atusa D @Atusa Feb 27 As I said in my earlier reviews, the further we go into The Hobbit, the weaker the films get—and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the lowest for me. The biggest issue? It’s painfully clear the story was stretched into a third film. Desolation had padding, but here I truly felt it. The pacing drags until halfway through, and while there are a couple of thrilling sequences (one being my highlight), Durin’s quest moves too slowly at first. Still, I can’t say I hate it. Inferior to LOTR? Absolutely. But the cast delivers, and Peter Jackson remains a gifted storyteller who knows how to entertain. More than anything, Jackson’s greatest achievement is bringing Middle-earth to life. Watching these films still feels like embarking on a grand adventure—and that magic is rare. Despite its flaws, I love BOFA. Its emotional moments always move me, and like Return of the King, the ending leaves me missing it's world all over again. Y además lo que más emociona es la increíbles batallas y su impresionante efectos especiales. En pocas palabras puedo decir. Cine puro 🗿!
