A cinematic epic fit for the biggest screens, The Odyssey proves with technical precision and unrestrained grandeur that there’s no filmmaker quite like Christopher Nolan to steer Odysseus’ voyage home.

A grand and gripping rendition of Homer's epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan. It's sincerely hard to imagine any other filmmaker on the planet being able to bring that source material to screen with this much scale, scope and heart. Go to Full Review

The Odyssey isn’t moving, exactly, but it is powerful as a by-product of a filmmaker choosing to stick to his guns. It gives us one of the greatest stories ever told reimagined as a cautionary tale, the blockbuster as a dark-hued Trojan horse. Go to Full Review

What I felt when this movie was over was not so much gratitude for what I had just seen. I felt instead the exhilaration of knowing that such a timeless tale as Homer’s was, indeed, still timeless. Go to Full Review

Forget whether the film is adapting a mythological poem well or poorly, a poem that can be more or less linked to real history. It's the story Christopher Nolan wants to tell. It's how Christopher Nolan wants to tell it. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Charles S 5h The Odyssey is definitely an epic movie for a heroic epic poem. The scale and technical direction of this movie are some of Christopher Nolan's best work to date. It is telling, though, that this movie was written solo like Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer instead of with his brother, Jonathan, who co-wrote Memento, The Dark Knight, and Interstellar. By this, I mean there is one specific viewpoint from beginning to end that none of the characters deviate from throughout the entire film. The movie is already 3 hours long, so, of course, some parts of the poem had to be left out. The obvious omission is the gods just think about watching Disney's Hercules if all of the gods were omitted from the script. You are missing an entire part of the story where the gods are backstabbing each other because, within the family drama, some gods want to help Odysseus and other gods want to hinder him on his journey home. This, in some ways, makes Odysseus a more selfish and self-centered character in the movie, because forces outside of his control were affecting his decisions in the poem. This new context also changes the ending of the movie to be different from the poem because different lessons were learned this time around. We move from rising against authority to seize one's destiny from the gods, to learning to sacrifice oneself in repayment of past sins and misdeeds. Even though all of the acting was great, the Oscar needs to go to John Leguizamo's Eumaeus for stealing every scene he is in similar to when his co-star, Anne Hathaway, stole the show as Fantine in Les Misérables. I also miss Odysseus' intelligence being seen instead of told. Several times, characters on-screen say he is smart, because the events of the poem that show how he is smart are completely left out of the film. Overall, this is one of Nolan's best films to date.
