Critic Reviews for The Tiger: An Old Hunter's Tale (Daeho)

All Critics (5)

  • There's a mystical-patriotic undertow running through this epic period adventure, which pits a legendary hunter against a majestic, even more legendary tiger in Japanese-occupied Korea in 1925.

  • An often moving fable about fatherhood, nature and respect.

  • The director wisely keeps visual sightings of the tiger to a minimum and relies more on the human element in the story, the conflict of whether these hunters and soldiers should pursue their goal of stopping the animal for fortune or glory.

  • Despite its lack of subtlety and the sense that it needed to spend a little longer in post-production, this is a thriller in the truest sense.

  • The Tiger is beautifully shot with an exceptional performance from the impeccable Choi Min-sik. Director Park Hoon-jung has masterfully crafted a face-off between two formidable opponents with a heartfelt history that digs deep.

Outstanding. Profound, philosophical, emotionally deep. On the surface it is a simple story about a tiger hunt. When you factor in that the tiger is the symbol of the Korean spirit, the movie takes on a much deeper meaning. The CGI work is spectacular. Deserves any awards it gets.
