Trumped plays way too much like a highlight reel from the last year, offering not nearly enough insight into the questions surrounding Trump's campaign and now-presidency.
The rushed nature of the film basically predetermined its mediocre quality.
It's easy to imagine a documentary coming along in five or 10 years that cuts through the noise, but it won't be this one.
A sharp, fun, disquieting, and fleetly edited chronicle of the entire campaign year, inside and outside the media bubble, with the focus held obsessively on Donald Trump's rise.
Does nothing to fill the need for thoughtful, probing docs about the threats facing our democracy.
A phenomenal and often funny triumph of election coverage repurposed as history lesson.
...there is a kind of car-crash fascination in watching the events unfold...
Trumped is a missed opportunity.
Trumped adds a reasonable amount of meat to the bone, particularly in how the election played out in the eyes of local pundits. This is not something overseas audiences have necessarily had much exposure to.
Trumped is among the first filmic takes on the election, but it surely won't be the last. And being so quick off the starting block may actually be a liability.
Trumped is simply too rushed - and too disinterested in actually stirring the pot - to add anything to the conversation.
What a missed opportunity. This behind-the-scenes look at the 2016 election cycle is almost nothing but flat re-cap, with few exclusive interviews and a glaring lack of insight and analysis. The "twist ending" comes as just as much of an unexpected shock as it did the first time. John Heilemann's excessive vulgarity also fails to impress.
