Movie Info

Koji Ota's Invasion of the Neptune Men actually is as bad a movie as the Godzilla films are supposed to be -- which doesn't mean it isn't an enjoyable film in its delightfully dopey way. Invaders from the planet Neptune, who look like klutzy guys in helmets that resemble overturned garbage cans, attack Earth. Their first contact is witnessed by a group of children who manage to be both obnoxiously cute and aggressive at the same time, but they're rescued by the sudden arrival of a mysterious hero (Shinichi Chiba) from outer space. Referred to as Space Chief in the English-dubbed version, and Ironsharp in the original Japanese, he flies in a jet-powered car that sort of rattles around like an airborne hot-rod. We never find out anything about him -- the children identify him as a hero and are in the film to cheer him on whenever he appears, and he always arrives to pull our fat out of the fire. The movie is a confusing mess, at least in its English-language version, but that's part of the fun.

Audience Reviews for Invasion of the Neptune Men

Really great stuff. 90% of the film is the characters running back and forth between points A and B. And Space Chief? He's the awesomest superhero/single father of like five adopted kids ever. Space Chief is so cool you don't need to know where he got his AMAZING ability to dodge laser beams or how his car flies through space. If you find yourself running back and forth from points A and B, be sure to give Invasion of the Neptune Men a watch! (As long as you don't take any of it seriously. It's even funnier with the MST3k commentary.)

The alien invaders from planet Neptune look more like Earthlings in costumes, especially since you can seen their hands, which look like normal hands. This was an ok film. I think it would be better if the aliens actually looked like aliens instead of Power rangers.

Nearly 15 minutes of stock footage to pad out the ending including the destruction of a building with a giant picture of Hitler on it typifies what type of movie this is. I can't believe Sonny Chiba is in it.
