Movie Info

Filmmaker Sam Green and musician Dave Cerf collaborated on this multi-media presentation Green has described as "a live documentary." Using Power Point as a medium for storing and organizing his images, Green ponders what has become of altruism in the 21st Century as he tosses a variety of film clips onto the screen while exploring several narrative threads at once, among them the "universal language" of Esperanto, the history of the world's biggest shopping center and an American political activist who has fled the country. As Green manipulates this collage of pictures and ideas, Cerf and his ensemble perform a score that provides both accompaniment and counterpoint to Green's presentation. Green and Cerf have staged several live performances of Utopia In Four Movements, which Green says is being adapted into a stand-alone film; the live presentation was staged as part of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
