Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the Emmy-winning duo responsible for the classic sitcom "The Office," are behind this eight-episode practical joke-turned-sociology experiment. It features Gervais and Merchant surprising their friend, the close-minded and simple Karl Pilkington, with a trip around the world to visit the Seven Wonders. It's a dream journey for most, but Pilkington has reservations, to say the least, especially considering Gervais and Merchant want him to become "one with the locals" at each stop.

Critics Consensus

Karl Pilkington's hilarious reactions to what his supposed friends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant put him through are only second to the exotic locales.

Pilkington's simple but twisted wit is a lot smarter than you'd think. Go to Full Review

With the additional benefit of some deft editing and a cheeky, Curb Your Enthusiasm-esque score, Pilkington can seem like the British equivalent of a Coen Brothers character, a rube dragged outside his comfort zone, to great comic effect. Go to Full Review

It may be a good time to experience Karl Pilkington’s unique cultural takes as he reluctantly travels the world, searching for nothing while breaking down everything that annoys him. Go to Full Review

You could argue that Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have influenced 21st century comedy just as much as Lorne Michaels and the Judd Apatow crew. They gave us The Office and Extras, but they also gave us An Idiot Abroad. Go to Full Review

It was all very amusing and should make a star out of Pilkington. Go to Full Review
