In its characterization and dialogue, in its shots of the lonely shore or a smoky nightclub, in the moments of dry humor or unexpected tenderness, Boardwalk Empire was an often-fascinating portrait of an age.

As hit-or-miss as Boardwalk Empire was during its five-season run, you can't say it didn't have a tale worth telling, full of characters both real and semi-fictional, living their lives until they know damn well they couldn't anymore.

For a series finale as obsessed with the notion of legacy as "Eldorado" was, being unsure what your main character's legacy is may be exactly the kind of assertion that's called for. The series seems content to let the audience think about such things.

While it may have seemed like a stellar idea to Korder and Winter... having the teen pull the trigger just felt just a tad old hat -- much like the 'Mustache Petes' Lucky Luciano so desperately wanted to rid himself of. Been there, done that.
