Delivered by Azaria with splendid aplomb, the new season demonstrates how important the actual presence of baseball - as engaged in on the field or seen from the announcer's booth - has been to the show.

This imagined dystopia is no longer amusing... But we're glad to have "Brockmire" back anyway, retooled as a story of a man trying to raise a daughter (Reina Hardesty) going off to college.

There is something so fundamentally ridiculous about this man and his world that it still feels miraculous how deeply felt Azaria's performance can be, and how much Jim's personal relationships wind up mattering.
